A quick hello to everyone from a new sportsman 800 owner.

I just picked the bike up yesterday, I had been looking at the Outty 800 and the SP800, but from researching different sites, and most importantly test driving both on some hard pack  trails, I bought the SP800.

This bike replaces an 05 Arctic Cat 650, which I unfortunaly totaled two weeks ago. The arctic cat was a nice bike, but ened up having  too high of a CG for where I ride. I could give it some gas to power slide around a corner, and end up lifting the front tires off the ground, bit too lite in the front end for me.

But again, hello to all, nice to see so much good info out here on the Sportsman.

Welcome to the forum! I'm thinking about buying a Sportsman 700 someday. Could you post a review of your 800 after you ride it a little more? If you could, that would be great.:dan:

Took the bike out yesterday, the same trails I rode with the AC 650, even the same trail I wrecked on.

As far as ride, it is a completely different machine. The 800 has allot of pull, not the snap off the line of the AC, but does have a much smoother power band, and allot more power midrange and top-end.

The SP800 rode great, took me a bit to get use to off camber trails with the SP800, the CG is much lower so I didn't have to move around the bike as much as I did with the AC 650. The SP800 feels much more stable especially going up steeper hills. A tap of the throttle didnt make you think you where going over like the AC did. Several trails that I had a problems with front end lift on the cat were no problem with the sportsman. The AC always seemed on the edge when I was riding it on bumpy trails.

The AC weighed about 710lbs, but one person could easily lift the front end off the ground and sit her on her tail , ( as we did several times to try and adjust the suspension), the Sportsman other the other hand, took 2-3 of us to get her up in the air.

Things I like about the Sportsman are , a solid power-band thru most of the throttle, a very stable feel when riding, respectable clearance for trail riding , easy access to the winch, and no more flipping a lever to get real 4WD.

Area of improvement would be, throttle placement a bit closer to the grips ( the AC throttle was closer to the grips and was much easier on the thumb), a smoother shifting linkage ( easy to shoot past Reverse into park while clunking thru the gears), and the "banging" you get when getting on and off the gas ( seems they all do it, CV joints? I heard)

Overall I am very happy with the Sportsman 800, It is a solid bike with a great ride, good in the mud and plenty of power.

How did you choose between the outty 800 and Popo?  I am a trail MAKER and I am worrid that the 800 MAX is not as strongly built as the Popo.  (I just sold my 05).  I rode a Max and loved it.  My concern is with its overall toughness.  I was so completely sold on a Can Am I put a deposit on one.  After reading webrebel site on his experience I am seriously concerned and pondering my decision.  I think the Can AM would be more fun.  I am just not sure it will be as strong.

Hey Horn if you went off one persons experience for all the machines you would never buy a quad. every brand has a lemon. you will never get away from that. do yer research. learn all you can about how to get or do the fixes and enjoy whatever brand you buy. OH Im an 800 owner with almost no problems at all. do I wish I had bought something different??? not on yer life. are there others that do?? of course.... but see I could be saying the same exact thing if I was a popo owner and got me a bad one too eh

I am.  I decided to stay with the Max.  The Max is what I want but my gut was saying Popo.  While my gut say's popo, the seat of my pants says 800 Max.  I will just have to make it tough.  Now what tires to put on it.  I need big tires to improve GC because of the riding I need.  I was thinking hard about the 30" ML's.  Now I am thinking 29.5 Outlaws.  I want a 14 inch rim.  I guess I have to go with Ml XXL's.

Congrats on your new machine. I have a 700 and really like it. Nothing like having a new toy to spend lots of money on. I'm sure you will really enjoy it.....GOTT
