I have a 2002 Sportsman 500 Polaris 4x4.  I am having a problem losing coolant.  It doesn't leak when it is sitting.  I was told there is an o-ring where the water pump attaches to the motor and that it would take a special tool to fix this.  Has anyone had this type of problem?  Would appreciate any response.

Welcome to the forum. While I don't have any Polaris experience, that does sound familiar.Maybe one of the Polaris guys will stop by with some help for you.

can you start the engine, bring it up to normal temp and see any water starting to leak?

You should be able to see where it is leaking. There should be some type of wet area on it with that unmistakable coolant smell.

There is a overflow vent tube that will let some coolant out when riding in rough areas and your fluid level can and will become low over time.

My 02 500 HO did this and I found no leak until one day after a ride I saw a drip of coolant come out of the little vent tube. I did ask the dealer and he said that is normal and that is the source of the loss of fluid. And to keep an eye on the level on the coolant level and to just top it off when needed.

Hope that this helps you and is the source of your fluid loss.

Thanks two bears  My 2000 has had the same issue and I have never found the source either. I was starting to think that it was just normal evaporation. but leakage out of the vent tube makes total sense

Maybe, the rad is caked with mud?  I'm having the same problem with mine and when it is running hard, I get a little bit out the cap.  My mechnaic checked it and said my rad is plugged with mud and that he had cleaned it out, but for me to keepo an eye on it.  I'm going to take it for a ride this week end and see if it stops or not.

Sounds like two bears hit the nail on the head, but just remember, in any coolant loss situation, keep qan eye on the oil, make sure thats not were your coolant is going. I lose a little out of my vent tube also, so thats normal for hard rideing.

Mine is not going into the oil, because I checked it and it looked great.  Also, mine only seems to do it when I run it hard, but it leaks out the cap.

Well, if you switch caps, let us know the results, I'll talk to my local Polaris dealer here and see what he says.
