More than 150-thousand Kawasaki all-terrain vehicles are being recalled. The Consumer Product Safety Commission says the 2001 through 2005 Prairie and Brute Force models can develop dangerous steering-control problems. The company has received at least three reports of injuries.

Officials say if either front wheel of the A-T-V experiences a major jolt while the steering is fully turned to either side, it could cause suspension damage and loss of steering control. Kawasaki has received 42 reports of ball joint separation, which could lead to the steering problem.

The safety commission recommends that consumers stop using the vehicles immediately and contact an authorized Kawasaki dealer for a free repair.

do the math.

three people hurt.

42 reports of damage.

150 thousand quads out there.

the odds of you getting hit by a airplane falling out of the sky is much larger.

That might be but if I owned one and I knew that 42 of them had the ball joint break, I would want it fixed either under warranty or recall

one out of every five hundered people will fall down today,  i triped, so four hunderd and ninety nine others will not.

but true i would not want the number 43 to be my bike.

I have 2 friends with BF750's and they have both had busted tie rod ends while out on the trail.  I know they are not part of that statistic because they just went to the dealer and bought stronger tie rods and replaced them and called it good.  How many others did the same thing?

Recently had mine replaced under the recall.  They also add a "stop collar" to limit the amount turning that the machine can do.  That limit is not a problem.  I doubt I ever cranked it that hard either way unless I was negotiating my parking space in the garage.

I tried to buy an extra set of tie rods and ends (new design) just to have as back-up...but my dealer told me the new design is not for sale except as part of the recall.  Kawi wants to get all the machines fixed before the parts are made available for over the counter sale.

they just went to the dealer and bought stronger tie rods and replaced them and called it good

....they may have ended up with the previous version of the parts...not the new and improved.  If they were the old parts, the dealer should not have sold them.

....If the work is not done by the dealer, those machines have not met the recall criteria.  NBD until they try to sell the machine I guess.

From my point of view....if it's a factory recall, let the dealer take care of it.  Why mess with it yourself.  Both from a convenience factor and a legal issue.

By the way....I never had a problem with the original parts.  Checked them before each ride...always within tolerances.

Oh....and I always have a load of fun on the Brute!  Isn't that what it's all about ?

They bought aftermarket forged pieces rather than the junk cast pieces put on there by kawasaki.  Looking at them you can see the diff thy are a much better design than what was orig to the machine.

There machines are out of the warranty period and they wanted to continue riding and not wait for the dealer to get to their machines.  I am sure they would have had them fix it if they did not have to pay for it but being such of an easy fix (30 min tops) we did it ourselves.

Now that's a good idea !

A buddy of mine replaced his with Heim joints rather than the ball joint supplied by Kawi. That's a nice set-up.

I will closely monitor the "new, improved" ball joint set-up.  When it starts to show some play, the Kawi ones are gone and I'm gonna have some made up with Heim joints.
