Need help trouble shooting. My Rancher ES 2000 model atv will not start in cold weather, anything under 60 degrees. I am not getting fire to the plug. When outside temp warms or I set it in sun it will start very easy.

Jake, are you still having problems or did you get it figured out?

Yes I do, I have not resolved the problem as of now. I did take a hair dryer and heated the coil the other morning, with out positive result. I think I have eliminated the coil. I heated the spark plug wire all the way to and including the spark plug. The FACTS I know is that it is not getting fire. Heating the coil, to me eliminates the coil, wire and plug. I have always known a coil, when bad opened when it gets hot not cool. There is always the exception.

This may sound like a stupid question, but I have to ask just to make sure. Are you using the choke when you try to start it? Have you done any mod's to the machine at all. My Rincon seems like it is pretty cold blooded also, but it will start with the choke on or a few pumps on the primer. It sounds to me like a carb issue. That is why I asked about the mod's. When I installed my jet kit, it took me almost a month to get the right setting with the main/needle/clip. It would act similar to yours, but only it didn't matter what the temp was. Another question, did this problem just start all of a sudden after the machine was working good for a while? Did you move recently, or changing altitude or anything like that. Just trying to get a little more background.

Zac, it is very cool natured. It has always been. This was the very first placed I looked for the problem. I have not relocated. The machine has been at the same place sense new. I have not modified it in any way. I do not trail ride, mud ride, or anything like that. I am 60 years old and a farmer. It has carried me around my farm and chased cattle it’s hold life. The problem started last winter. Last winter if I had it inside the barn it would start most of the time. The colder it was the less it would start. I had another Honda, a 300 and I ignored the rancher not starting. I just used the 300 it always started. Zac I am sure it is an electrical problem. I have put a meter on the plug wire and you can just hold the plug wire in your hand. There is Differently no fire to the plug. I live in North East Texas and it does not get really cold here. It just has to be under 60 degrees the cause the problem. I have called the local Honda shops and talked to several mechanics. They do not have any ideas either. Thank you Jake

Yeah that's kind of brain teaser. I find it hard to believe that it is an electrical problem based on what you have told me. I can see there not being any spark if it is below zero, but 40-50 degrees should affect it, but I guess anything is possible. Hopefully you figure it out. Let me know when you find out what it is

Well that cost me Zac! I found the problem with my Ranher. I took it to a retired Honda mechanic. He had to call Honda Inc. to find the problem. It was the ignition module. Something inside the module would cool shrink and open, no fire! Hope this helps someone else here. Simple fix for a do it yourself guy. The part on the internet was 95.00 + shipping. He charged me 150.00 plus labor. Oh well, live and learn. She starts every time now, hot are cool. Later Jake

Glad to hear that you got it fixed. Yeah it sucks to have to fork out the cash, but now you don't have to worry about it not starting.
