I was trying to think of an intersting way to learn and experience the DNR trails in the Arrowhead of MN.   I thought that making two-person teams and geocaching points of interest would be a cool way to discover alot.

Premise of the idea:  Teams of two would set out at 10 minute intervals from Two-Harbors or Silver Bay (TBD).  Each team of two will be given waypoints to load on a GPS unit (bring own) and they will need to find the way to each waypoint.  The waypoint will be clearly marked and the team must take a digital picture to prove they made it to each waypoint successfully(some may be off-trail and need to be hiked to).   The team that visits the most waypoints and arrives at the finish line and a predetermined time will win the event.

How to pull it off:  I would need to work with someone who knows the trails well in the area and can select points of interest worth seeing given a period of time (one day event or two).   That person would be responsible for marking the waypoint on GPS and also marking it (numbered 6ft orange flags or somethign fo the sort).

I'd like to keep it simple the first year to test the idea and keep the number of teams below 20 with a $20 entry fee per team for prizes (1st, 2nd, 3rd, last, and the "beyond lost" prize.   If you are interested in assisting, feel free to contact me at gamendola@yahoo.com    I think this could be a really cool/fun event for those with an adverturesome spirit like myself.

Input is welcome and preferred.  Unfortunately I am in the cities so a bit far for doing the ground work myself but I plan on heading up to the North Shore several times this year and cam help scope out the area.  In addition, I'll advertise it to alot of people I know in Duluth and beyond and can probably bring 4-6 people up for the weekend.

Also, suggestions on the name of the event are welcome.

Greg Amendola

Ok got some feedback already!

A couple of ideas on how to do the waypoints were offered:

1) Only give the first waypoint, the next waypoint will be available once you find the first.   If there are 20 teams and 10 waypoints, then only two teams would be following the same path, this would prevent people from being able to follow each others tracks for the most part.  Maps would be provided and each team would fill in a code word found at each waypoint to verify they were there (this will determine place if a team does not visit all ten waypoints(

2) The first team into camp (Saturday Night) where camp would be the finish line, would be the winner, etc.

3) The two-person team design is there to make sure a person is not stranded if stuck or broke down, teams can be bigger than 2 people.

Keep the feedback coming!

It can be anywhere really.   Zac, let me know if you have a good place in mind as I know you've put on alot of mines up north.

I guess it all depends on how big of an area you are thinking about covering. We have a good amount of trails up here, but alot of them are just fingers off of the main trail system. It is do-able, but I have never done anything like this before and don't know what kind of size area you would need.

If it were a one day event, which is probably the way to go for a first time event, I think 3-4 hours of riding would be the max we would need.   That can include having to double-back on trails and such as well.   Using trail systems can be make for some easy waypoints but i'd like some that you have to "break" trail to and I'm not so sure what the limitations are up there on that.   I figured if we were using DNR trails, many of which are rarely used, then it would be much like breaking trails even when on a trail.

I can be reached at 615 503 0138 if you want to give me a call and go over the format/logistics/what its all about sorta stuff.

Regards,

Greg

This sounds like fun but I would have to invest in a GPS. and then someone would have to teach me on how to use it .

I was thinking if we knew a large land owner (40-80 acres) then we could off-trail more easily.   Again, this is an event for adventursome folk who like to break trail, discover new places, and put thier skills aginst others for some fun.   If you want to form a team (2 or more riders) let em know who they are so I can start getting the day more organzied.  I'm thinking late Summer might be a nice time to do it...

Keep me informed...It sounds like a lot of fun. I am used to the idea of geocaching (http://www.geocaching.com) I have found just shy of 300 geocaches in Minnesota and Wisconsin...several while ATVing. I would prefer a location a little closer to home....but on the other hand, it's always nice to ride new areas.
