Looking to ride in Douglas/Ashland County. Take the tri-county trail to Nicolet Nat Forest out of Iron River, WI.  We would need to get a WI trail pass prior to departure to be legal and I believe July 1 is the start of the new pass.  I will get out more specifics on where to get the trail pass in WI.  Most sporting goods stores that sell fishing licenses sell trail passes.  I believe they are $18 and are good for a year. PM me if anyone is interested.  A good place to meet is at the Case Equipment Sales on the east end of Superior, WI on your way of town heading towards Ashland.  Trails are mostly sandy with some clay spots. They are winding and fun to ride with a bar conveniently posted at the half way point.   I know this is short notice but what the heck.  Sorry LARS and Bigfcat, but I don't think you will find the mud baths that you prefer to ride.  his area is one big sand dune.

More info needed. How long is this ride? Overnighter? I suppose I would have to put on my stock wheels and tires to meet their stupid width law

The ride can be anywhere from 45 miles to 130 miles.  Leaving from Superior runs on an old railroad bed and is pretty much flat with a few turns.  Pretty scenery and pretty boring after a few miles of eating dust.  Leaving from Iron River it can be about 45 to 60 miles.  I am not sure about width requirements for your quad.  Your Bighorns make you that wide?  I was looking at a day ride but you can stay in Superior / West Duluth and we can ride out of South Superior down to Namadjii State Park which is about a 90 mile round trip. I always bring extra gas on this trip since there is no gas stations that I know about along the way. This would be a scenery ride since it is on the Soo Line and Wind River Trail.  There is a buffalo farm on it which would of saved you lots of money from going to South Dakota.  I am going to go out to Iron River today and check out the amenities and possible meeting location in town.  I don't remember the name of the bar at the trail head.

Sounds Good. A good place to meet would be Perkins on 40th Ave West in West Duluth and then go over to WI.

Is this easy riding? Thinking about bringing my son on the 400 this time. He's 15 and can handle the ride fine as long as it's not real technical......I can bring some extra gas in case it is needed on the 400.

The trail head is located about 4 miles south of Superior on WI 35.  There is a paint ball club at the trail head.  Almost all is flat to rolling hills riding which could be classified as beginner. There is onee 1/4 mile stretch of ruts and possible mud with a hill climb .  The hill can be easily circumvented by staying on the trail that goes around. The trail does go onto designated county roads but they are dirt and not that well traveled. The trail is called Saunders Grade and then you get on to the road system to the Gandy Dancer.  This is not a loop so you come back the way you came. Overall it is a flat ride that you can easily maintain 30 to 40 mph on with no problems.  There is a more technical Intermediate trail at the beginning that we can ride but that leads you into the muskeg that BigFCat so fondly remembers and loves with nothing to winch you out but the guy behind you.  I take my daughter on my 400 and never had a problem.  Once you get on the Gandy Dancer there are some trails that come off of it but I don't know the legality of them.

You can also get trail pass's at Holiday gas stations, my wife and I are going to Iron River Wi for the forth of July weekend taking daughter and her boyfriend, and staying at the Top Of The Morn campgrounds. What time do you think you will reach Iron River? Maybe we can hook up and I'll take you to the Plywood Palace Bar its on the tri-county railbed that you take to Ashland. Outlandish my wifes outty 400 has mud-lites with type 5 series I havent measured it but I know its wider than 48'' and we have been stopped many times by the dnr and sherrif and all they have checked is pass permit and plate to registration(knock on wood). Outlandish do you carry a cell phone? If so I'll P.M. you my cell number and when you guys reach Brule call me and I'll meet you guys in Iron River, unless you decide not to go into Iron River.

If you're on the Gandy and you make it into the Minnesota part, the trails that come off of the Gandy to the West are the Nemadji Forest trails, which are supposed to be fun trails. I have never rode them cause last year my Bro got his flat as we were leaving the Minnesota part heading towards Superior. I don't know if you will make it down that far, but if you do I believe they were signed for atv's.

Cement Head - We will be leaving from Perkins at 10am to go get trail passes in Superior, WI.  I will go over there this weekend find a store that sells them such as the Holiday ot Northwest Trading Post.  Perkins is on 40th (Haines Rd) and I35.

The trail is easy with one bumpy part that has seen some trail work done. It is the only clay section of the trail so at least you look like you used your quad for what it was built for.  I can't remember how many miles to Nemadjii it is but I remember that the round trip is about 100 miles.  I usually bring a can of gas just in case.  If your looking for technical riding I wouldn't come.  It is a nice scenic ride through north woods of Douglas County, WI along old railroad grades and one or two county roads designated for ATV use.  Bring you own food/water since there is no stops that I know of along the way.

If you want to meet us at the trail head stay on 53 into Superior, WI.  Get on Tower Ave. and go South through town. You will pass a Walmart and then South Superior before you find the end of Superior. Tower Ave turns into WI35. As you go onto 35S you will pass a cemetery on your right.  The trail head is about another 1 or 2 miles past on your right.  Turn right on the rode that is posted for a Paint Ball club and cross over the tracks.  Turn left onto the old railroad bed immediately following the tracks.  We should be there by 1100 am after stopping for passe's. Let me know if you need more info.

You guys just make sure you don't stop at all the bars on Tower before you ride, especially the one next to the Androy Hotel!!:tg:

I thought about it, but I'm not heading up to the cabin, if I was I would for sure of met you guys, cause that would only be about a 45 minute drive. But seeing as how gas is pretty much 3 bucks a gallon it would be a spendy ride and I'm pretty tapped for cash at the moment. My deck project is costing more than I had originally planned. I've only put about 2 miles on my quad this summer!:cry
