If your start in gear feature and your brake light have quit working, chances are that it is a faulty brake switch.

It is located on the front left side near the frame and can be seen through the wheel well opening. It is threaded on one end and has 2 wires on the other. It is threaded on to the brake valve.

Replacement is easy just pull off the 2 wires and unscrew it, screw the new one on and plug the wires in. Done.

Replacement part numbers are:

BRP #710000734 about $15

NAPA - Echlin # SL134 about $8

Other Auto Parts Stores - Standard #SLS27 about $8-$10

Switch is #50 on the diagram.....

Seems to be a common problem.

Next time try the napa one specifically the Echlin # SL134. I stopped goin to places like car quest, auto zone. cheifs (when it was still in business) cause I was always goin back and getting the parts over again. I had really bad luck at those places. so now I only go to napa. I replaced mine back in Oct and I ride my bike almost dailey. :)

I've had a few different ones, 1 brp, 1 napa (echlin), and 1 auto value SL127, you would think these things would be pretty durable.

Atleast they're not to expensive, just a pain when they quit while out on the trail and you have to rock the bike to get it in neutral all the time.

Great addition to the "How To" section Outlandish. Saw this in another thread and thought it would be helpful to post it here as well:

2revdogs wrote: what is causing these to fail?  i've replaced mine 3 times in a month, two from napa and one from brp.

Of course use teflon tape around the threaded end to seal it where it threads into the master cylinder to prevent a fluid leak, BUT BE SURE TO USE SOME SILICONE TO SEAL THE OTHER END to prevent moisture from entering the end of the sensor that has the black plastic piece with the 2 wire terminals inserted into the metal sensor housing.

warranty? probably. driving 70 miles for a $12/5 minute part replacement is not reasonable for me anyway....if I had a dealer nearby I would probably have them do it

yep we got the part on warranty and my dad replaced it in about 10 minutes. all is working perfectly now

EDIT: if you were to connect the two wires that go to the pressure switch, you would have a permanent start in gear correct? doesnt that mean that you would have a full time running brake like also? i wouldnt want that

I put the Napa one on my bike and it's failed after 2 rides :(.  Guess I'll try and track down a different brand.  Do you think leaving the parking brake on causes them to fail quicker?

Another cross-referenced part # is  BWD - S194. I picked one up for a spare,  says made in America!  Available at, Manny, Moe and Jacks(the peppy guys) for about $8.

Ya, I've have this problem also, spoke with osokill, he guided me in the right direction, But I did notice on mine it's the cold that effects it,,, replaced once through warranty, and have been playing game with the heat/cold testing and have yet to throw in the NAPA baby,,,,, leaving in park would have NO effect, as mentioned earlier, the reason I know this I don't use Park.. ANYWAY OSOKILL I'm triing to add a post and I can't I have some )(*&^(^%*$%&%$ to do on BRP!!!! (UNHAPPY CAMPER HERE)>>.....:pod::ot:

I just changed upgraded the tail light to the 08 and I just noticed that my brake light isn't working and it starts in gear I think I'm going to check the fluid level and call and see if the dealer will just give me one of those sensors because I'm not going to pay the $50 deductible at the dealer for them to do it. So I just need to put some RTV or something around the top to keep the moisture out?????

well if it starts in gear without grabbing the brake lever then it sounds like you have another problem. if it starts in gear AFTER you grab the lever then the tail light is burnt out or it's not getting voltage
