I changed my rear diff fluid last week. Very easy to do, and I couldn't see paying a dealer to get it done there. Started by pulling off the plastic protective cover on the rear, then pulled the rear Richochet skid piece off. It is possible to do this without having to take off the skid, but you would need to rig something to funnel away the fluid as it would drain onto the skid plate. Once those are off, remove the upper fill plug, which is located on the left side of the rear diff. Next situate what you are going to catch the fluid in underneath and then remove the drain plug which is also on the left side of the diff. I would strongly recommend that before you remove the drain plug, that you clean it REALLY well. I say this for several reasons. There has been at least one person on here strip the allen head while removing theirs. The drain plug goes in approximately 1/8" past flush on the diff, leaving that amount of exposed thread to collect dirt and other nasty stuff that will make the removal of this difficult. When I was removing mine, I thought it was clean clean, and I could feel dirt binding in the threads. With that said, once it is out let all the fluid drain out. Clean the drain plug and the threads on the diff really good and replace it. Then add 10 oz of BRP diff fluid (or whatever comparible fluid should you decide to use something different), replace the fill plug and put the protective pieces back on the machine. This could be done in 1/2 hour easily. I would recommend doing this as there was some metal shaving in my fluid which is normal on any diff on a vehicle after normal break in. This is something that no one should be afraid of doing yourself.

I did mine two weeks ago at 64 hours 600 miles also. Very easy to do. My fluid was real clean. I thought well that was a waste of time as the fluid was obviously still good from stock. I replaced it with Amsoil Severe Gear 75w90

is the fill plug also a level checking plug? I just want to check my levels in both diffs, but am not sure if the fill plugs also double as level checkers?

There is no dipstick or window or anything like that to check them. I would assume that once you have it filled with the proper amount, you could use a pipe clearner or something like that to see how far down it is from the fill hole, but I don't know for sure. Maybe one of the shop guys here know of a trick the tech's use to check the level.

Well I pulled the rear differencial fill plug and put in about 125 ml of castrol Synthetic 75W90 before it started coming out the fill plug. My book says that it takes 250 mls for the rear so does this mean it low on oil? I tried checking the the front, but my socket allen wrench was too short and goes in at too much of an angle and started stripping the the centre of the bolt. These plugs are sure on there tight. I am not sure if these were supposed to be checked on the 10 hr check, but they sure are tight. On the rear one, once I finally got it busted loose, caused me to start leaking blood all over as it peeled abunch of skin off my finger. And I thought I was the over torquer.

Just a heads up, The differential plugs on mine and 4 others were also very tight, be sure to put some anti-seize on the threads when you install them, or at least some water proof grease. Giving them a good rap with a hammer before trying to remove them releases the stress on the threads and they will turn out much easier. Also my rear differential and 4 others that I have changed the lube in, 4 = 400's and 1= 500, ALL were way low, like maybe half full. Would recommend everyone check theirs. Mine and a couple others also had lube that was dirty and all had some normal metal in them. One of these that was low only 2 hours on it after getting a $150 service check up from the stealer. All the fronts were almost full and had much cleaner lube in them. I am sure this is due to not being used as much.

I do not have a shop manual. I asked the dealer how much oil goes in the rear diff. They advised 250 ml which is way lower than the fill plug. I have read somewhere here that the rear diff takes 300 ml., so who do you believe, ....I put in 300 ml's.

So to re-iterate, the owner's manual says 250 ml and the shop manual says 300 ml. I am going to do the 300ml I think....maybe 275 just to be safe. lol.

If it helps any the shops manual states 1 to 1.25" below the filler hole.
