Can all of you out there with the Factory winch from the XT package try your winchs out and let me know if it ever shuts your quad down or causes the low battery light to come on.  This was happening to mine and it turns out it is a know problem.  A fix has been worked out by BRP which involves installing a diode into the ground circuit of the winch.  I am just still waiting for the part to be shipped.  I will let you all know if this fix's my problem.  The dealer told me the part # of the diode is 710000999

Thanks

Oh yeah installing a roller fairlead is a good idea.  A buddy of mine has a grizzly with the same type of fairlead that comes with the Outty and he says he has worn several grooves into his.  I got lucky the last quad I had I bought a winch for and both the mounting kit and the winch came with a roller fairlead.  I will be installing it as soon as I pick my quad up from having the diode installed.

I was useing my winch today and it seemed sluggish... Then I looked at the digital readout and my engine light was flashing. so I turned it off and waited like 10 minutes and started it back up and it was fine,,, dont know what was up with that. First time in the 2 months I've owned it that I've had a heart failure:lololol:. I was also winching a 30 foot tree for our bridge we were making. Anyone have any thoughts on why that light came on?

This problem could be similar to mine.  LaMigraTX told me he had heard of someone else winching someone out of a mud hole and their low battery light came on.

I had to use mine to get back the only time I have been able to go out riding so far.  It worked great to get around tight corners on the trails when a tow rope was not a feasable option.  Once during that time I had the check engine light come on while I was using the winch.  I shut down the engine and started it up right away and the light never came on again.  I should ask the dealer what that is all about when I take it back down there for them to fix it again!

Is there any difference in batteries between the XT's and non-XT's?

Not my winch, but it got used on me:cold

We got into some deep stuff up in the hills, I broke through the crust, set the Outlander down right on the skids on the hard crust with all four wheels spinning in mid-air, nothing but fluffy powder getting tossed all around.

My friend with his brand new Traxter 650 CVT XT, spotted me a winch pull.  Without it we would have been there for hours in the freezing cold digging my baby out.  I heard about it all the way home too.  How the mighty 800 bit the dust.
:tong:

I am getting my own winch installed before we go out again.

MIne died today when it was cold out.  I was using the winch and it just killed the engine.  I could not get it started for a couple minutes.  Took it to the dealer and they said "thats the first I have heard of it"  But he admitted they dont service alot of bombs.  I also asked about the front shocks,  he said he does not know and would have to look at another one to see if they are the same.

It doesn't surprise me that the error light comes on while heavy winching.  Winching takes a LOT out of a battery real quick.  The electronics don't care for that too much.  The relatively low amp batteries used in quads can't handle a whole lot of winching.

I wonder if a capacitor could be installed to allow more juice for when the goin gets tough.  Maybe a cap. like the audio guys use.  Some of those are 3,4,5, and even 6 Farad.  Thats a LOT of juice!

Any electrical guys here???

I just installed mine and haven't winched with it yet. I did feed out about a foot and reel it in. While on the button the pod lights dimmed a lot. i hope this is not going to be a real problem

Wouldn't just reving the engine make a big difference while winching?  At idle the voltage output is almost nothing from the alternator.

I know on outboards, 10 years ago, a 200 hp Merc at idle it put out maybe 5 amps (barely enough for a fish finder and a marine radio simultaneously). At half throttle the output was like 35-40 amps.

Beware using it in the winter. On my Traxter I only trailered (open trailer) it twice during the winter and the fairlead roller corroded up tight. Rollers wouldn't even move.

That's the reason I went to kevlar rope and a smooth aluminum fairlead. You shouldn't use rollers with kevlar because it cuts it when it gets caught in the corners of the rollers.

We might have to strap on a marine deep cycle battery!!!:hp::lololol:

Assuming you're joking about a deep cycle (not available in our size and inappropriate for cranking engine)...  There should be a gel-cell batt in our size. had one on my Traxter.

Hasn't anyone tried revving the engine in neutral while winching?  Everyone might be getting their panties in a twist over nothing. Ever see a tow truck driver not set the hand throttle higher when winching a car up the ramp?  :cold

After I got the check engine light while using my winch I assumed that the current draw was the reason and did rev the engine whenever I used the winch from that point on.  I did not have any problems after that.
