I took my new 800 out for the first ride the other day, man that thing is fun! As soon as I took it off the trailer the shifter was acting funny, It was difficult to get it into and out of gear. As the day went on this got worse, eventually I could not take it out of gear unless I shut off the engine. By the end of the day if it was in gear you could not come to a stop because if you did it would kill the engine. I took off the cover to the clutch and it seems as though the belt is too tight as it has alot of tension on it and continues to spin the transmission with the engine at an idle. What is going on here?

Welcome to the wheelers forum XR4rd! It sounds like the clutch is not releasing for some reason. I hate to guess at what it might be but maybe broken/weak primary spring, misalignment? I'm no mechanic.  Best to take it to your dealer

I took the cover off and confirmed that there was nothing binding up but it appears as if the belt is too tight when the clutch is fully released.  I will be taking it to the dealer later this week, I hope it does not take too long for them to diagnose and fix it.

I took it to the dealer and finally got it back 2 weeks later, the problem was the 1 way clutch and a friction washer.  The day they started the work they got a TSB from BRP stating that they need to lubricate the friction washer on all 800's that they had in stock.  They told me that it was unfortunate that mine already went bad.  It was fixed under warrenty or so I thought.  I rode it for about 10 min around the house and it started to have the same symptoms.  I am wondering if I got water in the tranny and it is not providing enough resistance to slow down the tranny for me to shift.  I know this seems far fetched but it is all that I can think of, I am going to change the fluid then try it.  If it still doesnt work I will be taking it back to the dealer and hope it doesnt take another 2 weeks for them to "fix it".

Ok so that tranny fluid they put in those things can only be bought at a Bomber store.  None around here are open until tuesday!  I guess I will just take it back to em and go nuts complaining that they didnt fix it the first time.  Another thing, I took off the cover over the CVT and something chewed up the inside of the belt, this is from the previous service problems.  Shouldnt they have replaced the belt if there was a defect in a piece of equipment that caused that to get damaged?

Amsoil makes a high quality synthetic chaincase oil, used it in my sleds before, probably better than the Bomb stuff:cents:

I saw that and I was going to try to get that but nobody around here sells it cause the only machines that use it are sleds and Bombers.  There are not many sleds in florida!  Thanks for the advice though.

I will wind up getting it from the local dealer, the problem was that they were not open when I needed it.  I wish the local auto parts stores would carry stuff like that.

Update...The "throwout bearing" (the clutch rides on it as it slides back and forth) is the culprit to the problem.  This is locking itself to the wear surface on the clutch and it is not disengaging completely there is a maintenace bulletin for the dealers to grease this area.  I hope this info helps somebody else.

Go Ride!

Just got off the phone with the dealer and he said he had to replace all the clutches, and it was a defect.

my 400 outy used to do the same thing when I got into deep water and got water in the clutch. I would drain the water and then the belt would stay engaged and stall the engine. The dealer pressure washed the clutch out and it would be fine until the next deep water mishap. I've had my 800 belt wet but after I drained it all was well.

The seal is leaking around my belt box and my dealer is replacing it this week (gotta love the speedy parts delivery) I think it is from fine dirt getting in with the water and gumming up the clutch.

Is that the gasket to the cover or the inner seal?

The cover gasket looks as if it was not installed correctly after they did the clutch recall work and it rubbed on the clutch and wore down half of it so it doesnt seal any longer when it is mated up with the other side of the housing.  It has been sealed with RTV while I have been waiting for them to get the new seal.

That happened to lamigra when they did the recall clutch work. The gasket was folded over or misaligned and it leaked....can't be too hard to make sure it's on right!

Thats what I say, now they have to wait for a new bearing and the sleave that the bearing rides on again.  The problem is that dirt is getting in there with water and the dirt is sticking to the grease on the bearing and when the clutch slides back and forth it wears out that surface.  When you are riding you normally dont take the clutch all of the way through its potential motion which causes one area to wear more than others, the clutch will then hang up on a groove that is created in that area.  It appears as though this problem will finally be taken care of but we will see.  I discussed this with Mike Penland then got back to the dealer with what we determined the culprit to be, my dealer was not too happy to hear that I was discussing this problem with others.  Maybe he was afraid people were going to hear about the quality of his service and find it to be sub-par, in all honesty he has done a great job getting the machine in and out of there and he has given the problem alot of attention; it was just too bad that the customer had to tell him what the problem was.  I also told him to order the other parts at the same time he ordered the gasket, maybe he will listen to me next time!

ditch.. sounds like you have debris in the primary clutch.. specifically the one way bearing. This bearing is what the belt rides on while in gear and stationar
