Cow Mountain is located on the west end of Clearlake CA, 6 miles west of Lowerlake it is also accessible through Ukiah. The staging area near Ukiah has vaulted bathrooms and a few picnic tables, there are a few remote camping spots in this area. The access from Lowerlake has no bathrooms or picnic tables and is located in a creek bed so it's not very well developed but easy access regardless. It's about a 2.5-3 hr drive from Sacramento or the Bay Area depending on your location. Trails are mostly marked by numbers and the standard CA OHV green/blue/black. Here a black diamond trail is no joke and I don't recommend them for ATV's, I believe most state motorcycle only unlike Stonyford. There are a few creek crossings and some fairly deep ravine descent/ascents, trails are a bit narrow in some spots but I had no problems on the 800 as long as you don't have to turn around. Vegetation varies from scrub brush and manzanita to light pines. Weather is the same as Stonyford with 80's in the summer, you can expect no rain from the end of June through the end of September which makes for dusty conditions, this is a problem anywhere in CA during the summer, it almost never rains and if it does it dries overnight. There is a dirt road that goes from the Lowerlake side all the way over Cow Mountain that you could drive a car over and the trails cross over it fairly frequently, it is OHV legal as well. There are some nice vistas of Clearlake from the dirt road, it is very scenic. For those of you that don't know, Clearlake CA is anchored by Mt. Konocti, which is the southernmost volcano in the US and the very end of the Cascade mountain range. Cow Mountain is divided into OHV and other recreational activity including horseback riding, hunting, fishing etc., they are seperate though and OHV is not permitted in this area. Overall this is probably a better dirt bike OHV riding area because about half the trails are dirtbike only but there is plenty of riding for quads. If you get a pretty early start you can probably cover all the ATV trails in one day.
