Stonyford/Davis Flat riding areas are located about two hours north of Sacramento, about an hour north on I5 then about an hour west into the riding area. There are two staging areas, Davis Flat which is past the town of Stonyford and has running water, a few bathrooms and abundant camping. The other is Little Stonyford/Digger Pines...this area features only about 10 camping spots but has a vault bathroom and there is plenty of day use parking a hop, skip and a jump down Goat mtn. road. Both areas have unloading docks and are patrolled by rangers although more frequently at Davis Flat. The road into Davis Flat after you go through Stonyford is paved but gets down to about a lane and a half as you go down into Davis Flat, good luck towing a trailer down there with an approaching vehicle, I see a LOT of toyhaulers down there so just be prepared. The road into Little Stonyford is dirt and pretty well maintained, it's 4.5 miles off the paved road but takes about 15 minutes. There are creeks at both staging areas where you can cool off and clean up during the summer months. Weather is dry and hot in the summer months, very mild in the fall and wet and muddy in the winter/spring. It can get very dusty in the summer with temps hovering in the 80's but cooler on the western slope. The terrain varies from the eastern "rain shadow" slope with lots of manzanita, small pines, scrub brush and sharp rocks to the western slopes which turn into deep forest the further west you ride. There are numerous creek crossings and waterfalls through out this area, the vegitation is fairly lush on the western side. This area is fairly remote as there are no paved roads through this mountain range. Wildlife is abundant! You can find hawks and vultures, mountain lions, lots of deer and I think we saw some wild pigs. I'm sure there are bear but we haven't seen any or any evidence of them, you probably have to go much further north to see them. There are hundreds of miles of marked and unmarked trails as well as various dirt roads. The main dirt road through this area(goat mtn. road) is restricted to licendsed highway vehicles in some spots on the north side of Goat Mountain but there are trails that parallel the road. The trails vary from very easy to extremely difficult and are marked accordingly, green is easy, blue is moderate and black diamonds are difficult, similar to ski slopes. As our experince levels have increased we have tested some of the black diamond trails and have managed them pretty well, we also feel some of the blue trails could be black diamond because of some extreme inclines/declines. The creek crossings are fairly high during the winter/spring run off's, not impossible to navigate but you have to have a utlity quad with good ground clearance, I made it across a high creek two weeks ago but my buddy couldn't have made it, we also found a quite bit of snow so that bogged things down.

Just a quick update. The creeks were lower so crossing trail #1 was no problem and it has been groomed very recently so a lot of the large rocks are gone, very good improvement. Snow was minimal but we stuck to the south/eastern slope out of little stonyford. Some mud but was on the cooler side.

Another update. We still encountered snow up trail #4 and had to turn back, the road to Letts lake was also covered in snow too deep to keep going. We ended up riding down to Indian Valley resevoir, about 32 miles round trip from Pacific Ridge. The trail/road is a very nice ride, more of a trail then a road in some spots but very easy to ride and scenic as well.
