The Red Lake/Coyote Lake trail is for modified 4 wheelers but you can make it up on your quad. Take HWY 168 about 6 miles past Shaver Lake and turn on the dirt road marked "Red Mountain". If you get to Sierra Summit ski area you went too far. Drive up the dirt/gravel road (not legal for ATV's at this point) keeping right at the "Y". Another miles or so will take you to some corrals. You can park there or turn left and go another 1/4 mile for more parking.

After that it is only about 6 miles to Red Lake and another 2 miles or so to Coyote Lake but it will take all of 2 hours to get there! It's one boulder field after another. You definitely want to have skid plates. A winch for Max owners will help if you get high-centered.

The trail out of Red Lake has a section called "the Rookie Strainer" where all the guys with stock jeeps turn around and go back.  This trail is a real test of your skills at picking lines through the rocks and you'll be amazed at just how capable your machine is. It does demonstrate the shortcomings of the visco-lok.  Nothing all that bad or even dangerous - just noticeable is all.

Spend a few hours at one of the prettiest natural alpine lakes (9020 ft high) in California before heading back down. Or bring your camp gear and spend the night.

Total trip is just over 16 miles and you will be WORE OUT when you get done.  I hope I didn't make it sound too difficult though. You can make it but only real nut jobs will look for anything rougher than this. For better directions, check out a 4wd guide book on the area.

We parked at the Red Mountain trailhead.  Went to Mirror Lake, then West Lake then Strawberry Lake. Started down the Red Lake /Coyote Lake and went about 1/2 mile. Really rocky. There was a Jeep that had broken his tie rod right in the middle of the trail and they were not going anywhere anytime soon so we turned around. We had a pretty full day as it was. Will leave the rest of the Coyote trail for a future trip. Also want to do the Swamp Lake, Spanish and Dusy trails.
