I went to Hollister Hills this weekend.  The weather was in the upper 50's low 60's, not much dust at all and lots of sun.  Holister Hills has 64 miles of trails and numerous tracks, but only one for ATVs.  The 800 did awesome on the track, powersliding through corners, throwing roost, and not so bad on the jumps either. There were lots of hillclimpbs that were fun.  One imparticular was called Psych hill.  It is a long very steep clay soil uphill with turns and ruts.  I gave it a 1/4 walk up and thought I picked a good line.  Well I should have walked up further, because about half way up it was V rutted.  I didnt want to drive into the V so I backed down a little and turned up to the right even steeper.  Whew I finally made it, gassed it up the steepest part and there was another V rut in the clay, no way the bike could have made it up.  I had to back down the steepest part, my wrist hurt from arm pump because of the brakes.  I was by myself because I just moved to CA and don't have a riding crew here, so no help either.  About half way down I blast out towards the right and was able to find a different way down.  Good thing I had brand new Bighorns and the MAX or it would have rolled for sure.  One more reason buy a max and insure your machine!!!

Overall Hollister was fun, but I prefer more woods and trail rinding like in NEPA.  At Hollister I always felt like I was confined.  I still have to explore the Sierras, so if anyone knows where I can put a fast fun 100 miles on the bike please let me know.

I was a POLICE Detective in Hollister, Calif and we really miss the west coast for ATV riding. We moved to SC when I retired and there are no sand dunes, no real good riding spots and the southern food sucks. But we live on a beautiful lake and we've got 2 docks and I wouldn't trade it for anything.

I tried out Hollister 2 weeks ago also. It was fun, and my friends were really impressed the outlander could keep up with them. Negatives, crowded and dusty just a few days after it rained. Try calling the Stanislaus Nat Forest and have them mail you a map. Any trails above 4k feet should be a good start, but I don't know that forest, too far for me, but closer for you.

Look for a place called Georgetown around Placerville Ca. We used to have a great time riding on all the logging & US Forrest service roads. Another place was Stoneyford around Pillsbury Lake if I remember correctly. We used to have big (I mean 500+ people) enduros there and the riding was really more for Dirt bikes, but I've seen Quads up there too! Georgetown has a Ranger Station that used to give out maps of the riding areas. Goodluck and let me know if the riding is still open and how the trails are??

Hollister Hills is BEST during the week and yes can be real dusty and HOT! Being I was 15 miles away I rode there only on week days! I had a friend who had 3,000 acres of grazing land in the hills above my house and we'd just ride up the hill, open the combo gate and ride off into the Sunset. It was great, plus he liked us to ride there as we'd watch his heard and if we ever caught anyone on his property we'd run them off or take them to jail if they were A--holes!. We've had quads since 1987 when I bought one of may many Banshees. The Banshee was the best ATV ever made and it screamed after you had the motor worked over.

Good luck and Be SAFE!

the georgetown area has changed. there is an asphault road from stumpy meadows thru uncle toms cabin and goes all the way up to ice house road. all of that ice house to loon lake (entrance to the rubicon) area has a lot of use now.

I've ridden Hollister a few times and it was cool but crowded and you can cover every trail in one day.

At Stonyford you can ride forever.

Also look into Cow Mountain next to Clear Lake and Knoxville above Lake Berryessa.
