I have ridden all over the eastern US on trails both sanctioned and outlaw trails.  I have found what I consider the best trails in the eastern US.  The trails consist of 1,100 miles of everything you can think of from high-speed fire roads to tight single track.  There mud sections you can stay and play in or go around.  The elevation starts at 800 feet above sea level to 3,600 feet above sea level.

Several issues to consider, bring a GPS, many have gotten lost due to the vastness of the area.  Second, deep snow in the higher elevations.  It may not be snowing at the parking area but up in the mountains it can really sneek up on you.  Third, bring extra fuel, remote location with no gas stations.

Sanderson Wilderness Area is located outside of Charleston, West Virginia and is a free riding area.  The property is owned by Coal, timber and gas companies.  If your interested in riding this area your welcome to contact me and I will give you more details including directions and areas to ride based on your objectives.

A few of the difference between H & M verses Sanderson are as follows:

H & M                                       Sanderson

Rules                                         No Rules or restrictions

Permit Fee                                  No Fee

Trails Marked & Mapped               Your on your own

Trails worn, little rough              Smooth with a little mud here and there

Mostly single track              Mostly fire roads with 300+ miles of single track

The first reason we started riding Sanderson had to do with the H & M Trails getting worn down and rough.  The second has to do with the style of riding we do, fast, and the best place to go fast is high speed fire roads.  The third reason has to do with the first and second, when traveling fast the last thing you want to do is run into someone coming from the opposite direction.  Due to the vast size of Sanderson you can ride all year long and rarely see another person.

We usually ride from the beginning of October to the end of March in Sanderson and have spent all winter (every other Sunday) riding in Sanderson and have never seen another person/bike or tracks.

My advise if your interested is to contact someone like myself and have a local take you in there the first day and show you around.  Then you and your group can spend the weekend/week exploring the area.  The main thing is, have a cell phone and 12 volt charger for it, carry extra gas, food and water along with tire repair kit and 12-volt compressor.

Have a pre-determined plan, meaning a certain time you plan on being out of the woods and a local person like myself you will call and let them know each evening you made it out.  If for some reason you don't make it out, after you have exceeded your 2-hour curfew rule, then the search begins by the locals.  Usually you can ride to the top of the mountain, get cell phone coverage, call me with your GPS coordinates and I can tell you how to get out of there.  With todays quality GPS products, we have not had to go looking for anyone in the last 3 years.

In regard as to places to stay while in the area, there is a new Comfort Inn & Suites about 9 miles from Sanderson along with a Bob Evans, Subway, McDonalds, Rax, Ponderosa.  If you’re looking on a map, take I-79 north from Charleston to the Elkview exit, 3rd exit up I-79.

Bart-- when you say that your group rides fast, do you mean that you don't stop to admire nature? Does your group hug trees?  Please give me at little more info on your groups riding style. Perhaps I might come along for one of your outings. Sounds keen...........................

Mike:  As long as there are no sheep in the area the group rides fast.  As far as the tree hugging goes, we have been known to bend those types over stumps and allow Dave to show them why the doctor said "large women or livestock".
