Here is a review I wrote for LaMigra's website a few years back:

Review of 2003 Outlander 400 HO by Outlandish from Minnesota.

I was looking for a mid-size bike with power, comfort, handling and true 4wd when I found the Outlander. I had it narrowed down to the Kodiak, 400 Sportsman and the Outlander. The outlander won hands down for what I wanted. Here's why:

Pros:....  Power: The Outlander's 400 Rotax pretty much smokes the others in the power dept. In fact it is equal to many 500 cc motors.

Brakes: The brakes are very good! It has a single control lever for both the front and back. That took awhile to get used to but after a bit, I really liked it that way.

Clutching: The bottom end felt a little soft to me, so I installed a EPI clutch kit and that solved that problem. The engine braking is very strong. Going down hill in low gear, I think you could get off and walk beside it LOL

Comfort: Once I sat on the cushey seat of the Outlander and just the feel of it (sitting comfort and handlebar height), I really liked it. I can stand up without bending and I'm 6'1" tall. The rear suspension is debateably the best out there. I think it is as comfortable and smooth riding as the Polaris but has many less moving parts in it. It has very little body roll, even when hard cornering and really just handles great.

4WD: The Outlander has switchable 2wd/4wd. The Visco-Lok front differential is probably the best next to a full locked dif. When in 4wd it senses wheel spin speed. When one spins faster than the other it locks both (unlike others that claim to do that) and stays locked as long as you are on the gas. If you let up, it reverts back to 3wd open differential. It has performed flawlessly for me.

Cons:.... Being the first year of the Outlander, there were some bugs to work out. The things I have had repaired on mine were: Voltage regulator went bad and cooked the battery, speedo fogged up sometimes, original brakes wore out quickly. I had an oil leak from the front shaft seal and the starter drive went out. All these things were covered 100% by the free 3 year extended warranty.

Would I buy again? You bet BUT I am waiting and hoping for a big bore model. All in all for $5400 I just could not find all these features on any other bike!

If it had fuel injection it would be the perfect 400/500 class bike; although we have had no metering issues when at higher altitudes.
