I have a 2004 Outlander 400 with about 300 miles on it.  I'm getting a "FAIL" message on the odometer now, which disappears when the key is turned off then back on again, but reappears a short time later.  Everything appears to be running normally.

Anybody have experience with this problem and know a specific cause and/or fix?  My dealer said the machine should come in for service.  Problem is: my dealer is in Maine but I live in Massachusetts and won't be up that way for a few weeks.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I have the same problem. I was told it's the voltage regulator. They also said if I left it too long it would fry the battery.

wrighty,

I just brought the machine home from the dealer.  Before I brought it there I put a volt meter on the battery, brought up the rpm's and read 19 volts.  It was definetly the voltage regulator.  The dealer told me it was a recall issue.  If your VR is mounted on the front of the machine the replacement is mounted underneath the rear by the battery.  The dealer replaced it at no cost.  Good luck.

I don't think that it's a recall job yet. It cost me the $50 deductable and it took maybe 20 minutes to do. All is well!!!
