Attention Outlander Owners / Buyers! OK time to do a little posting about the Bomb SST frame. This frame is of revolutionary design with it's ski like action, however it is very vulnerable in the right situations. As you may or may not know, the Outlanders do not come with skid plates. They should in my opinion! I have 500 miles on my 400 and the frame has some good size dings in it, not a big deal, never really concerned me. My friend Greg has only a few hundred on his 800 and the frame looks very bad guys. A lot of damage from hitting a rock just right in the front of the frame with no plates. I do think when you pay $8000-$10000 for a new machine, it should have some kind of skid plates on it. Here is a pic of Greg's frame:  Quote from Greg: "Now I will say the frame did not completely fail (meaning it was not drivable, we did do a 110 mile trail ride the next day with no problems), but I do consider it badly damaged." Bombardier makes a decent skid plate as does Perfex. Highlifter is designing some as is the Ricochet company. While skid plates are not cheap, they are a lot cheaper than replacing a broken frame. Here is a pic of ATVer's Bomb plates:  Before you invest in the tires and wheels or cargo boxes etc., consider spending a couple hundred bucks on a skid plate system.... ...Bombardier, let's get real. Put some protection under there!!!

My On that pic is i dont care what brand frame, what skid you had that is just down right hammered due to severe impacts,and impacts will bend,smash,crunch just about anything......

I'd feel a lot safer if I could find a skid plate builder that can make a 1/4" to 3/6" from diamond plate SS. Would rather have one overbuilt that just marginal. Could anyone that knows of any metal skid plates please post the names here. I've seen all the ads in the magazines, but magazines are 3 months behind, It will be May, 2006, before we;ll see ads mentioning BRP 800's. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

The metal A-arm skid plates in the picture above look too squared off to me. I think the leading edge of the plates should be sloped to help skid the ATV up and over any objects it may hit. As they are in this picture it looks like you'd simply hit squarely on the bottom front edge and either bend or break something. Also, the foot area looks like it would easily snag up on things. In my opinion they need skid plates as well. If anyone watched "Fisher's ATV World" they had several shows in which they were riding 800's across, I think, Costa Rica or one of those central America countries. There was some REALLY bad terrain. You have to wonder if there was any damage. Since BRP is one of their sponsors it's likely they wouldn't say anything negative. Matter of fact, if I recall, there was no comments about their vehicles at all. None. And that's unusual. The company arranged having the machines sent down there and I know they must have picked them up and brought them back to factory. I betcha their engineers were crawling all over those things. And if they saw the kind of damage I would expect, the 2007 versions will have full skid plates. .....ju heard it here first.

Turboman, I just ordered 1/4 inch thick by 6 inches wide by 4 ft. long stainless steel bar from ebay, Speedy metals, for $54.00. I also ordered four pieces of 1/16 inch thick by 1 ft. by 2 ft. long SS plate for $54.00, from them also, for under the foot area and the A-frame. You may have to take it somewhere to get it bent/cut/welded/drilled, however I can do that myself. It may not look as pretty as the BRP plates, but they are a lot stronger. They don't have any more 4 ft., but they have alot of 3 ft. and some 5 inch wide 3 ft. for $46.00. There are at least two other areas of ebay that have SS also. Check them out. Good man. That stuff is hell to drill, as you know. The local machine/weld shops gave me a price of $400-450 incuding 3/8" SS, completely cut and drilled to a template. He said it would weigh 50 lbs. He based his estimate on my supplied figure of 12 sq.ft. (purely an estimate). Might be able to knock off $100 if I shop around and use dropoff material in sections. Also, the foot pad plates could be polyehtylene from Hebco (about $80US) because that area isn't that critical. Just something to cover up those vulnerable to hanging up aluminum supports. All depends on access to a template.

I don't honestly know. Hebco would know but it's his trade secret. I just might ask Ray if he could do a polyethylene set in 1/2" stock instead of 3/8". I'd feel better.

When I bought my Bomb, the dealer had these magazines that were basically a conglomeration of all the write ups the Outlander 800 has had in all the atv magazines published. On page 33 of Bombardier's own propaganda magazine is a picture of a Bomb 800 stood up on end so that you can see the frame. In that picture you can see that the frame is bashed in just like La-Migratx's. Funny that Bombardier didn't notice that when they put together this advertisement for their product. I bought the skids and put them on before my 800 had even one mile on it.
