I don't think the holes in fram will hurt unless you remove the skids and then hit something. I have a plow mount under mine and I had to drill a hole also. Sure would be nice if they made a skid to work with the plow mount.

Bleeding Yellow Welcome! I know that 2 holes in no way compares to the Perfex skids that require numerous holes drill into the frame. How much clearance did you lose with the plow mount?

Concerning mounting the Ricochet skid plates WITHOUT DRILLING ANY HOLES in your frame.

Go to  the Bombardier section of this forum and look under the "Ricochet Skid Plate Modification" poste-

I was able to mount my skids without drilling any holes in the frame.

I am still away, and as soon as I return to the U.S. I will poste pictures of this modification.

As a synopsis.... I welded the "center" skid to the "Rear" skid. The two bolts at the trailor hitch, along with all the bolts attaching the center skid to the running boards hold both the rear and center skid plates fine.

As for the "Front" skid.... I welded two chunks of aluminum to each side of the front skid... around 3" from the end wich butts up to the center skid. These brackets are drilled through to accomodate a 1/2" bolt. The bottom of the holes are countersunk so the bolt heads are recessed.

The brackets are the same thickness as the frame is tall, so the tops of the brackets are the same height as the top of the frame with the skid plate installed.

I then made a bar that rests on top of the frame, and spans the outside to outside measurement of the brackets welded to the skid.

When the two 1/2" bolts are tightened, the bar "clamps" the skid to the frame.

If you have a good coach you will be way ahead of someone just jumping into it. Not to mention the amount of money that you will need to drop for a decent welder is not worth it for just one or two jobs a years. It shouldn't be outrageous to have someone run a few beads for you. The other aspect for beginners is that the fact that you don't want to practice on stuff like these skids, you can end up really messing stuff up when you are learning what voltage to use.:cents:

I lost about an inch and a half, or so of clearance with the BRP "quick mount" mount but the way it was set up to guide the push tubes in was like a "V". I thought it would hook or grab on stuff easier than a standard mount with just the rounded ears hanging down. I took that mount off and used a warn mount. With the warn mount I lost maybe an inch. The mount didn't fit correctly, it was to short in the back. I just drilled different holes in the plate and got it on.

Received my Ricochet Skid Plates and A-Arm protectors last night.

They ROCK, and I can't wait to get off work and go home and install those bad boys... Come to think of it, I need to let my boss know that I'm feeling a little sick, probably oone of those short, 1-day flu's that are going around... (Pardon Me)... :puke:

Well Roaddog.... I shouldn't want to practice my first weld on my new skids HeHeHe

You probably could find someone to weld it for you.... for no more than it takes.... I wouldn't drop more than $40 or $50 on it.

I'm do back in the states next week.... I'll get those pictures posted.

Mudbelly, I know what you mean about welding. I have done some welding about 20 years ago when I worked in a sheet metal fab shop.  I wouldn't want to refresh any skills on my skids.  I still want to see your pics.  I do know a guy who is a welder, I just don't know if he can weld aluminum.

I have a question on installing the A-arm guards.  There are 3 smaller bolts each with nut and 2 washers.  On the larger bolt that goes closest to the tire all I had was the bolt and 2 washers no nut!  My qustion is do I use the stock nut or am I missing the 2 nuts?

It also talked about some clamps and oiling the welded nut not sure what they were talking about there.  I did not see any welded nut and did not recieve any clamps.

I had the same problem.  I just used what they provided with the stock nut and the guards seem to be secure.  I wondered if they mistakenly sent the directions for a different set of guards or if the Max version they had to work on actually had a welded nut.  I dunno..

The welded nut are the ones on the" L" shaped floorboard brackets,I used "NeverSieze" on mine.I Believe you are to re-use the balljoint mounting nut on the A Arm guards as I did not get those two either.

I believe to weld on these frames properlly you would need to tig weld them.  I have been welding for a couple of years and aluminum doesnt like mig to much but you can buy wire for it, but I never like to do it.  So I will go back to the shop were I learned and have one of the guys weld them up if I get them.

Aluminum like cast needs to be preheated in order to put a good weld on it.  take yer rosebud and put some heat to it then if you have the correct wire and gasin yer MIG.. then yer in business :) Translation .... yeah take it back it the shop, buy em a 12'er and say thanks when they are done lolol

You could MIG it, but I wouldn't recommend it. TIG is the only way to go on an application like this one. That way you are sure to get good penetration on the weld.

Well not so fast Hillbilly.... I was just informed to be on the first flight to Nassau in the AM.

Great.... just great. :pu:

Anyway..... I'll have those pix. posted by the time I retire......

The UMCG mods are coming along fine, albeit slowly... The skids are on, and yes.... No holes.

The E-Ears are at 80% completion....got the bars off so as to get the correct angle of the guards. Being the first set for a new model, I'll weld them up while they are on the handlebars, that way we can have a pattern for your set! HaHaHa

How is the ol' gal treatin' you?

I am thinking of useing powder coat on these guards.... I'd like to get them camoed like the bike! Would be nice.... but last we checked..... BIG $$

Scabbard mount complete, and it is adjustable.

Not much else to do. GOOD. I allready have a few orders for guards.... but I seriously doubt I'll be makeing and selling any this time.... No time to whip em' out.

As you would know it.... Bomber has no insert in the ends of the bars like the ol' Hondas.....so I had to machine a couple of steel inserts for the ends. Oh yea...and the bars are metric... allways nice.

Been rideing it as much as I am here... I think I have a whopping 7 hrs. on her now.

Gotta' go... need any Conch Salad?

Yea guys.... TIG welding is by far better than MIG for most aluminum applications.... however, the Ricochet skids aren 3/16" thick, and if all you have access to is a MIG unit.... then by all means MIGer up-

A little pre-heat will help unless you have a welder that will crank out some amps. This joint too be welded on the skids is a V joint... so it wont be  a probablem for even a novice to do.

100% Argon or 80Ar/20He mix( Argon 80% / Helium 20%) for the gas.

4043 or the like wire/ filler rod-

Happy welding.... now THAT is a contridiction! HeHeHe

Outlandish, The E-Ears we refer to are a result of me and a friend being, to say the least dishearted with the puny, inadequate handguards available.

In my opinion these guards were too small and did not position correctly on the handlebars to be of much help for preventing briars, brush and the most important reason, cold wind from turning a ride to the treestand on a cold day into a miserable experience.

So I set to work on designing  handguards that would accomplish such tasks. The guards are bigger than any I have seen without being in the way. They are made of aluminum, I would prefer a plastic, but everyone liked the aluminum, so it stayed.

Ther are "generic" guards like the one Penland uses on his race bikes that can accept larger plastic pieces that work great.... but I like to tinker in the garage and down time at work.

If I am able to stay home more than a week or two, I'll post a pix of these also.

Oh..... "E" stands for Elephant. My daughter thought the set I put on a Honda Foreman I had made it look like a Elephant.
