Northern Connection snowmobile trail condition update

The Lake of the Woods County and Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) are warning snowmobile riders that poor riding conditions exist on the Northern Connection grant-in-aid snowmobile trail, which runs between Birchdale and International Falls.

While recent colder weather has refrozen some of the wetlands the trail crosses, wet areas still exist under the new snow that has fallen in the past week, according to Mary Broten, Thief River Falls area Trails & Waterways supervisor. Trail groomers are out on the trail, but have encountered several sections where they cannot connect the trail due to the poor conditions.

Because the trail is isolated, cell phone service is poor in spots and gas stops are far between. "With this combination of factors, I'm encouraging riders to reconsider using this trail until more cold weather freezes these areas," Broten said. "If they really want to ride the trail, I'm advising them to use extreme caution until the groomers can get through."

The local club has opened the trail and is out trying to groom the route, said John Hoscheid, Lake of the Woods County auditor.

"The lack of frost has made it tough for the grooming machines to get through this winter," Hoscheid said. "The trail groomers have been out really trying to get through and are giving it 110 percent to get across the whole route."

The Northern Connection has been groomed from Baudette to Birchdale this week, but is not groomed from Birchdale east to Big Falls. The south of Birchdale to Pelan junction is currently being worked on.

The club has a trail condition hotline and Web site that is updated every Friday. The Lake of the Woods Snowdrifters hotline is
