649 S&W

They look a little funny but the "shrouded" hammer gives the availablity of shooting it right thru a coat pocket if needed. A regular hammer gun will grab fabric and fail, most semi-autos will fail also. and yes I have tried it, 3rd round and the jacket cought fire.:yikes

I'm on my 2nd one, I literally wore the first one out :)

It pretty much goes with me everywhere, but don't tell anyone:wink:

Mine changes from time to time...

Saw the first ground squirrels today (sunny and 45F) in the snow, so now it's a heavily customized Ruger 10-22. Badgers are out, so I may have to change my pack-along to my 22-250.

Hmm.. turned into a "what are you packing" thread, huh :)

If I'm out to do some shooting, I'll usually take the Heavy barrelled mini-14(1"groups at 200 yards) for coyotes and jacks and always a 10-22 and 22 pistol. Have yet to do a real hunt and need to take any of the serious hunting rifles.

Sr. has a .45 Colt 1911 Govt....it's a good gun to have along when we're in the Superior National Forest...ammo is getting expensive for it, though...used to be $8 for a box of 50, now I think they cost around $12 a box...

Usually a ruger 10/22. if I carry any at all. I have a 22 mag revolver but dont use it. I am moving to alaska and am going to look for a more powerful handgun to start carrying around with me. What do you all suggest for stopping the animls up there if the situation ever came up?

A large caliber rifle, if your talking Alaskan bears. Most any pistol will just piss off the big bears there. But if your gonna take a pistol on your atv your gonna have to go with a 454 Casull or bigger! :2cent:

yesterday i picked up my new s&w 460 XVR with the 5" barrel. one box of cor-bon 325 grain loads at $50.00 for 20 rounds. this will make a good bear side arm gun. or the 500 s&w i here is getting popular up north.

I cant imagine the kick that some of those pistols have, maybe I will just stick with a smaller caliber handgun and keep a rifle close by.

Oh, you bet. The big bore hand guns are not a typical day of fun at the range, I can only get around 20 rounds through my Casull and then, I'm quite done. I took 5 shots out of a 500 S&W, done.

There is a huge bear that was on display at an airport in Alaska, reports are that they pulled something like 50 rounds out of it like 357's and 38's and the like, none being fatal shots and all healed over, I think it was a 416 Rigby that finaly brought it down, memory fails me on the exact numbers but you get the idea. They also say save the last shot for yourself when dealing with a huge grizzly, gruesome.

I bought a marlin papoose tear down semi-auto .22. It comes in a floating case, is stainless steel and has a 7 shot clip. Its also grooved for a scope. I have only shot it once so I can't say on the accuracy but it will fit in my storage box easily. Reviews on the internet say its fairly good for accuracy ...time will tell.

I haven't dropped one yet. I seldom put the cross hairs on anything I am not going to eat. well unless I have to of course. so I am puttin this in the "have to" category LOL and do the rancher a favor. if I knew I would always be shootin 100yds or less I would carry a smaller gun. :)

Coyotes can do alot of damage to some ranches and farms, where I go there's an apple/sheep rancher/farmer that I spoke with and he told me the coyotes cost him about 10k a year, mostly from them eating thru the irrigation pipes to get water, not to mention they can put away some apples and pick off a sheep or two. He gave me free riegn on his property (80k acres) to shoot them.

for the every day trail ride i pack the old 357 s&w with the 2x scope . or the t/c encore pistol in 308 with the red dot scope .
if its a hunting trip who knows what i may pack in a rifle . but always one of the pistols .

the old s&w has helped me ware out many wheelers over the years and my late uncle many more before me .

no other hand gun fits my hand like a smith&wesson. when at gun shows i always look for a good old smith. my other favorite trail gun is my 7 shot 4 inch 686. my local gun shop is across the street from the car dealer i work at. i think i own part of that building  LOL
