Something you would be wise to consider is renting a satellite phone for your trip. I've found internet sites that rent phyones for $19.99 a week. Talk time is about $1.39 minute but they're not for conversation. You can call from sat phone to "land line". Not sure about landline or cell phone to sat phone, but I would think they have figured it out.
There are even areas in WI where theres no cell service. I can imagine how bad it could in the Rocky mountains.
