A banner deer season

Minnesota's deer hunters had another banner season, killing about 270,000 deer -- the second-highest harvest ever recorded.

"The crops were out, the weather was good and there were deer," said Lou Cornicelli, Department of Natural Resource big game supervisor. The harvest was second only to the 290,000 deer killed in 2003.

With a healthy deer population of 1.3 million going into the fall, officials had expected hunters to bag at least 250,000 deer. But the higher harvest was a surprise.

"It's more than I thought we'd get," Cornicelli said.

Minnesota hunters had never harvested 250,000 deer until four years ago, and now have harvested more than that four years in a row.

The official deer harvest was still being tabulated last week, but Cornicelli said 265,000 deer already have been registered, making it the No. 2 harvest on record. And the number should hit 270,000 when the final counts are done.

Despite the near-record harvest, Cornicelli said some hunters have complained about a lack of deer last fall. Yet the high harvests of recent years likely will fade because the DNR is trying to reduce deer densities in some areas.

"It's going to come to an end," Cornicelli said. "We're not managing for a record deer harvest every year."
