Just found this site.  I've had my 650 MaxXT for two months now.  Really pleased with everything so far - runs great.  My neighbor and his son, both Polaris owners, are both quite envious.  Have noticed a few things though that I wanted to check with experienced owners about.

1) I've taken it through a shallow creek (maybe 20-24" deep at deepest point and 10' wide) and upon coming out on the other side the engine was bogging down for about 5 mins and the meter cover fogged up.  It would barely rev above 2000 rpms.   However, after a few minutes it gradually started clearing up and within 20 minutes was back to normal.  Is this normal when taking through water, or could there be some type of leak into the transmission that caused this?

2) I see a few aftermarket exhaust pipe options out there for the 800's.  Will those pipes work/fit onto the 650's since it is the same bike with just a de-stroked engine?

3) Dealer told me that Castrol makes the motor oil for BRP and that I could save money by just using the Castrol.  Not sure if I want to do that.  I would prefer to use the XPS Synthetic oil.  What kind of engine oil do you recommend?  Has anyone tried the Castrol Syntec synthetic oil, or a Mobil1?

4) What are you guys seeing in the way of continued or diminishing performance as the hours add up on these Rotax engines?  Granted, I only have about 15 hours on my bike and don't notice anything.  But it seems like alot of other small, high-revving engines like this show signs of fatigue at some point.  Just wasnt sure how long these things will continue to perform before losing muscle.

Welcome,

I will try to answer your questions the best i know.

1. you more than likely got water in your belt causing the belt to slip. It will be fine once it dries out. you should take the cover off and clean it real well now. THe drain bolt is the bottom right side of the cover. nothing you can do about it besides snorkleing.

2. Im not sure but i woult think it would. you would also need the doebeck for it. If you wanted more power you should have gotten the 800 though.

3. As long as the oil meets the manufacuters recommendations  in your manual your fine. Castrol syntec, mobil 1 will work. I prefer Amsoil 0w40. more importantly is to change it according to the manual.

4. Rotax motors are about bullet proof. Thats the one part of the atv you wont have to worry about as long as you follow number 3.

Do some searches on here> TONs of info.

I use Moble syn in mine. I've used moble for years and found it to be great stuff. Also Moble makes more synthetics than anyone else. Castrol is just a bottling company they don't make their own product.

My experience with belt slipage is that the engine won't bog down but feels more like you're in Neutral.

When my belt got wet, it glazed/burned a spot on the belt from it slipping and I eventually ended up replacing the belt. The glazed spots on the belt caused the clutch to grab intermittently and it felt like the tranny had gear problems.

Your problem of bogging sounds like you probably got an electrical connection wet and may have been shorting out. Per a suggestion from another on this site, try some di-electric grease on all your electrical connections.

good luck...
