Two young brothers die in ATV crash with pickup truck

Associated Press

EASTMAN, Wis. - Two young brothers on an all-terrain vehicle died when they drove onto a highway and collided with a pickup truck pulling a horse trailer, authorities said Wednesday.

The accident that killed the 9-year-old ATV driver, Austin Nolan, and his 7-year-old brother, Justin, happened about 6 p.m. Tuesday about three miles south of Eastman on Wisconsin 27, Crawford County Undersheriff Jerry Moran.

The boys had driven the ATV to a farm field where their father was operating a tractor and chopper, Moran said.

The accident happened as the boys followed the tractor home on Nolan Road, and the tractor turned onto Highway 27, Moran said. Austin Nolan drove the ATV across the highway to apparently take a shortcut home and pulled in front of the pickup, the undersheriff said.

The family's home was about a half mile away, he said.

"I think he was too young to be on the highway, but it happened and we have a tragedy that we can't undo," Moran said.

A person must be at least 12 years old to drive an ATV on a public highway or road in Wisconsin and must have successfully completed an ATV safety course, said Karl Brooks, deputy chief warden for the state Department of Natural Resources.

The 59-year-old pickup driver and two passengers were not injured, investigators said. There were two horses in the trailer being pulled.

According to the DNR, seven people have died in ATV accidents so far this year, including a 5-year-old Portage County girl. She was a passenger on an ATV that rolled over while driving up a steep embankment July 3, the DNR said.

Seventeen people died in ATV accidents in 2004, compared with 19 in 2003 and 11 in 2002, the agency said.

About 276,000 ATVs are registered with the DNR, double the number of just five years ago, Brooks said.
