 ATV's Stolen for Fast Cash

Jul 19, 2005, 11:25 PM
More than 10 all-terrain vehicles have been stolen from DeKalb County in just one week. 9 motorcycles are also missing. Police say the vehicles are an easy grab and a great cash cow.

"Here's why they're a favorite target, they're expensive, a new one will cost you between five and nine thousand dollars, they are readily available," Dekalb County Chief Deputy Mike James says.

ATV's or 4-wheelers are a must have in rural Sand Mountain. Unfortunately, they're also a must have for thieves.

"They have the unique ability to sell for cash quick. If you steal one today and the guy paid $7,000 new for it, you can get $1,000 cash overnight," James says.

That quick cash turn around is making these machines hot black market items. Police say the owners help to make them easy targets.

"It's an expensive piece of equipment, don't leave it in your front yard. Don't leave the keys in it," James says.

"You wouldn't leave your car unlocked in normal situations. I think people see them as toys," Chuck Sexton says.

These big toys are Chuck Sexton's life. He owns Fort Payne Power Sports and knows the value of his merchandise.

"I think anyone that's going to make an investment of 3, 5, $6,000 should get insurance," Sexton says.

Buyers need to beware. Make sure to ask for a bill of sale and pay attention to price.

"If someone says they brought you a four wheeler for $1,000 and you look at it and it's a year old and it should cost $5,000...it's going to be stolen," James says.

Police say don't leave your ATV in plain sight. Chain it up to a tree or fence post if you have to. Make sure you keep all your paperwork on it and, of course, take the keys inside.

It's just ez money to them.....they don't care how much sweat and labor it took ya to buy your wheeler.....you can chain it or whatever but insurance is the best option for me. For about $80 a year, it is worth the money
