ATV riders work on building new area trail network By ANDY ROSEN Reformer Staff Thursday, January 19, 2006 - TOWNSHEND -- Right now, there aren't many options for people who want to ride all-terrain vehicles in Windham County. According to the Vermont All-Terrain Vehicles Sportsman's Association, there are no official off-road trails in the area, so riders have a difficult choice. Legally, they can ride on unmaintained roads, said Executive Director Todd Sheinfeld, but those don't tend to go anywhere. More often, ATV riders break the law, trespassing through the backcountry on private property. An area group, called Southern Vermont Trail Riders, is working on a solution to this conundrum. Last summer, the nonprofit began consulting with landowners and clearing trails in an attempt to build 100 miles of trail between Townshend and Reading, where it will connect with a 700-mile statewide trail network administered by the sportsman's association. The trail would be the southernmost ATV route in Vermont. It's sorely needed, said Dennis Thomson, president of the Southern Vermont Trail Riders. By the end of next summer, Thomson said he hopes to have a path through Townshend, from Rattlesnake Mountain up to a property owned by the forestry company Meadowsend Timberland. The 62-member organization hopes to finish the project over the next few years. Thomson said the trail will benefit both riders and landowners. "We want to show the community and landowners that we're a responsible group," Thomson said. Riders, he said, will finally have a route to travel through the area. Landowners, on the other hand, will be assured that people will travel through safely and legally. The Southern Vermont Trail Riders, backed up by the sportsman's association, will patrol the trails, making sure folks respect property and obey the law. "We'll be keeping illegal riders off the trail," Thomson said. In addition, Sheinfeld said landowners will have the legal protection of the sportsman's association. If someone gets hurt on its property, the association will protect them against liability. He said many landowners already have people riding on their property, and this is a matter of managing the traffic. "If you work with us to develop and manage a route," Sheinfeld said, "chances are your trespassing problems will be reduced." The Vermont All-terrain Vehicles Sportsman's Association coordinates the activities of 17 groups across the state and Sheinfeld said he's glad people are stepping up in Windham County. "They're an amazing group," he said. "They're very well thought out in what they want to do and how they want to go about doing it." As the project moves forward, Thomson said he needs more members and more financial help. They're having a group meeting on Jan. 25 at River Bend Bar and Grill.
