DULUTH NEWS TRIBUNE A Superior man whose body was found Tuesday in the Pokegama River south of Superior apparently drowned. An autopsy conducted Thursday in Anoka County, Minn., on David Finlayson, 47, lists drowning as the preliminary cause of death. "Of course, toxicology tests are taken at the time of autopsy and those sorts of results won't be available for quite some time," Douglas County Detective Sgt. Ed Anderson said. It appears Finlayson had been riding his all-terrain vehicle on the river on Dec. 15 and started up a hill but then tumbled backwards. Searchers found Finlayson's body partially in the river, under the ATV, about 75 yards off a trail. Anderson doesn't know how thick the ice was when the accident happened. When searchers found Finlayson's body, the ice was thin near shore but was 5 to 6 inches thick where his body was. "I guess it's kind of an unusual ice situation," Anderson said. "He hit that ice backwards just in the right spot to at least force him down under the ice and into the water. Then he was trapped by the weight of the machine."
