FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Open houses to discuss forest classification and road/trail designation for northern border state forests (November 27, 2007) http://news.dnr.state.mn.us/index.php/2007/11/27/open-houses-to-discuss-forest-classification-and-roadtrail-designation-for-northern-border-state-forests/#more-42146 The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and cooperating counties will co-host three open houses in December to discuss the forest classification and road/trail designation process that is about to begin in northwestern Minnesota. The public is invited to review maps of inventoried access routes and comment on current and desired future public uses, both motorized and non-motorized, of DNR-administered lands in the Northern Border project area. This area includes four state forests: Lake of the Woods, Lost River, Northwest Angle and Red Lake, and 21,000 additional acres of DNR Forestry Division lands that are located in Beltrami, Clearwater, Lake of the Woods, Marshall, Pennington, Red Lake and Roseau counties. (Beltrami Island State Forest is not included, as it was addressed in an earlier project.) County land managers are also seeking input for uses on county tax-forfeited lands. Maps for the entire planning unit will be available at each open house to facilitate convenient public participation in the process. Open house schedule: • Dec. 10, 2-7 p.m., Warroad Public Service Building, 804 Cherne Dr. NW, Warroad • Dec. 12, 4-7 p.m., North Beltrami Community Center, County Road 36 and Could Avenue, Kelliher • Dec. 13, 3:30-8 p.m., Baudette County Courthouse Board Room, 206 SE 8th Ave., Baudette. The goal of the coordinated planning effort is to create consistent access plans that will best serve forest users. The planning team will consider public comments while developing preliminary proposals for forest classifications and road/trail designations. Public comments will be shared among cooperating counties, so interested parties need only submit comment once. Public information and maps for the Northern Border planning effort will also be posted on the DNR Web site at http://www.findthetrails.com.
