The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and the St. Louis County Land Department will co-host three open houses to discuss management of forest roads and trails on state and county lands in the Cloquet Valley State Forest and on DNR-administered lands in south St. Louis County. The Cloquet Valley State Forest is northwest of Duluth. There will be several stations at the open houses. People can stop by any time between 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. to review maps of inventoried routes, and make recommendations or comments on specific individual trail segments and types of trail use. The team is also seeking public input on the classification for the forest – managed, limited or closed. In managed forests, forest roads and forest trails are open to all motor vehicles unless posted closed. In limited forests, forest roads are open to motor vehicles and forest trails are closed to motor vehicle use, except where designated and signed to allow specific uses. In closed forests, motorized use is restricted to highway licensed vehicles on forest roads and other public roads. The public comments received during this stage of the process will be collected for consideration in the field team’s designation recommendation to the DNR commissioner. An official public meeting and opportunity for comment will be held prior to the formal classification of the forest and designation of roads and trails.
