DNR NEWS - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

JUNE 16, 2005

Media contact: Forrest Boe, Northwest Region Trails &
Waterways supervisor, (218) 755-3969.

DNR urges OHV users to check trail conditions before
heading north

With sunny weather returning, many off-highway vehicle
(OHV) riders are anxious to head north to ride the trails.
Some of those trails might be closed, however, due to
recent heavy rains. Minnesota Department of Natural
Resources (DNR) officials urge riders to make sure trails
they plan to ride are open before heading out.

Temporary road and trail closure information is available
on the DNR Web site at http://www.dnr.state.mn.us by clicking on
the "OHV Riding" button. The information is updated every
Thursday. Trail conditions are also available from the DNR
Information Center by calling (651) 296-6157 or toll free
1-888-MINNDNR (646-6367), or by contacting local DNR
offices. The DNR also posts trail closure signs at trail
entry points and at state forest parking lots.

Recent heavy rains have necessitated some closings to
protect trails and resources, according to Forrest Boe, the
DNR's Northwest Region Trails and Waterways supervisor.

"Some trails are susceptible to damage due to wet
conditions and saturated soils," Boe said. "Some wetlands
are overflowing and there has been some minor flooding.
There is a lot of water in some areas.

"This is the first weekend with major sunshine," Boe noted,
"so riders are going to want to head out on the trails. We
don't want them to be disappointed, so they should check on
trail conditions before traveling north."

POPULAR NORTHWESTERN MINNESOTA TRAILS THAT HAVE RECENTLY
BEEN TEMPORARILY CLOSED ARE:
- Martineau motorcycle trail in Paul Bunyan State Forest
- Round River ATV trail in Paul Bunyan State Forest
- all OHV trails in Buena Vista State Forest
- a portion of the Moose River trail system in Land O'
Lakes State Forest.

Temporary road and trail closures are lifted as soon as
conditions allow it.

"We appreciate all those users who check trail conditions
first, avoid areas that are temporarily closed, and ride
responsibly wherever they are," Boe said.

The DNR also reminds riders that Minnesota law prohibits
ditch riding south of the agriculture line between April 1
and Aug. 1. The agriculture line runs roughly from Moorhead
to Taylors Falls along Highway 10 and Highway 95. The
purpose of this prohibition is to minimize disturbance of
nesting birds and to protect the cover that ditches
provide.
