I have a 6x12 aluminum trailer.  I pull it with a Jeep Liberty.  Weight of the trailer and Outty is roughly 1200lbs.  I'll be adding one more atv, not purchased yet.  Jeep says to have brakes on a trailer if over 1000lbs.

Was wondering if anyone has added electric brakes to their trailer.  The trailer does have the axle mounting bracket.  A couple of local shops quoted $420 and $480.  I don't know if those are good prices or not.

Any input is appreciated.

Northern tool carries brake parts check online for prices. You will need either a complete kit or parts to make up the kit, which include backing plates shoes with magnets and drums, plus a 6/way trailer plug and a brake controller in the Jeep Jeep will probably need a 6/way female end on it too.:2cent: actually there is a place in alabama that is real reasonable for parts trailerparts.com I think

thats actually not a bad price if the shop is doing the complete install on the car and trailer

A little off topic but, I assume you are side loading. I have a 14 foot long trailer and can barely get another small ATV on it with my MAX, loaded inline.

Prices don't sound too bad if like Oso says, it's a complete job. Just the controller can be a little pricey.

Many, many years ago I rented an enclosed uhaul trailer. It had some kind of braking system on the tongue of the trailer. It wasn't electric, it used the force of the trailer to engage the brakes. Maybe someone else can explain this better. Not sure if it would be any cheaper either.

For now I have to load inline.  I purchased the trailer prior to the MAX and if I try to load the MAX by the side, the rear tires sit on the edge of the ramps so I cannot remove them.  I actually have to make or have made a couple of extensions to side load it, but that's another project.

I'm pretty sure those prices were complete, but I'll have to call back and verify.

Parts for electric brakes run just over $200. from a couple different sources around here. Plus you will need a brake controller installed on or by your dash. They cost around $75-$100 plus installation. Other type is a surge brake they are hydraulic and mount a master cyl. on the tongue. I much prefer the elec. as you can adjust them for load and sensitivity. Brakes aren't required in MN til trailer weight hits 3k but they sure help reduce the "pucker factor" when you need them....GOTT

I called again and they are getting a price together for me.  I'm not sure if Ohio has a weight rating for brakes, but the Liberty manual recommended them for anything over 1000lbs.  I'll post again when I get the quote.  Sounds like the 420 price wasn't too bad when you start adding all the parts and labor.

Those are the, surge brakes, they can be a little herky-jerky sometimes, Don't know if they are adjustable or not. They usually have a failsafe also that locks'm-up if your trailer lags too far behind(as in a disconnect).

Well, looks like I'm going to be learning how to do trailer brakes.

I called both places again.  The original place at 480 now says it will be 400 and oh, 'I didn't know you needed a controller", the service man says, that will be about another 150.  So "it shouldn't be more than 550 + tax" he says.

The second place never called back, so I called them again, this guy says "between 5 and 600 + tax".  :hp:

I can now see how those first prices were sounding good.

Anyone know of a good knowledgeable company I can buy the parts from?

It's a pretty simple bolt-on . Remove your wheels and hubs, bolt on the backing plates which will come with all the brake parts attached. Install the new hubs which will have the brake drums attached, re-install the wheels. Don't know if you get new wheel bearings or need to reuse your old ones. Either way be sure to repack them with grease. Run one wire to each backing plate and up to the trailer tongue. Attach the wires to your new 6 or 7 pin trailer plug...trailers done. Shouldn't take over and hour or two. Check with your Jeep dealer. Your Jeep may be prewired for a brake controller. Most newer SUVs are. Then it's just a matter of finding the right wires and hooking them up to the new matching trailer plug on the Jeep. Now you just saved 3-4 hundred bucks, or spent 3-4 hundred bucks depending on how you look at it.....Northern is as good a place to find what you need as any. I have always had good luck with them.....GOTT

I've been checking out a couple of places including Northern.  As I learn what's needed, it seems like I'm in the 450 dollar range for parts.  That's a Northern 10" kit and breakaway and a Prodigy controller.  If that is the case, then the 'second' quotes I got make a little more sense.

Maybe I should just get a nice F350 and forget the trailer breaks....:dan:

That would do it, even over do it . Just a full size truck would work nicely.

I figure I could drive the truck, trailer and outy deep into the woods and if I get the truck stuck I'll just haul it out with the outy....:aniwh:

Not an outy, but you get the idea....rescuing a stuck wrangler
