Need some advise here guys. I have been throwing around the idea of getting a new truck (not brand new, but newer). Mine is at 125000 miles, which is a ton for a plow truck. It is starting to ride worse and worse and the motor is getting rough. Have had to dump more and more maintnaince cash into it each winter and I think it needs to go. With that said I am thinking of getting a diesel, tons of torque, better mpg, and the motor will easily outlast the body of the truck. I have always been a chevy guy, but I have seriously considered a dodge. The dodge is more heavy duty IMO then the chevy. I feel that chevy is trying to make all of their trucks ride smoother than a buick, and they don't seem to care about HD trucks unless you getting a 1 ton or bigger. They are putting 245 tires on all their 3/4 tons and those seem to fill up the wheel wells with those. I prefer more ground clearance than that, and the dodge comes with 265's, but 295's don't even come close to filling the wheel wells. I'm not talking about putting a lift or nothing like that on it, but bumping up to 285's to bring up the GC would be nice. The cummins motor has been around forever and has been proven, but I don't know much about their tranny. I feel that the allison tranny is much better, but chevy has changed their diesel motor 4 times in the past 6 years.

Any info would be much appreciated.

Buy the Dodge!!! I am a chevy/gmc man too always have been BUT the turbo cummins/alison trans is an unbeatable combo. both are all but bullet proof.   Plus the Dodge is a very well made truck, and it looks cool LOL.I think if you look into it you will find that the replacement parts are pretty reasonable too. you will get the better fuel mileage and power with the turbo. most non turbo's suck wind LOLOL

I have the 6.0L gasser in my chevy right now with the 4:10 rear gears, and that thing sucks the gas like a camel does water in the desert. I have been trying to look on forums and see what kind of problems people are having with both of them, and it looks pretty good both ways so far. I just like to get all the facts before making a purchase like that. I have never owned a diesel before, so I don't know alot about maintnaince on them either. I can do alot of stuff myself with a gasser, but would be hestitant on a diesel.

Now I don't know what I am going to do, I was kinda leaning towards a dodge, but now I just found out today that I can get a way better price on a new chevy. One of the dealerships has a special offer that they give to law enforcement officers. I can get a brand new chevy for $1500 under invoice, not sticker price, but invoice. So with that said I am again at a dilema.

Had a Dodge (gas engine), replaced it with a Ford (gas eng), replaced it with a GMC. By far the best of the bunch. Their four wheel drive-on-demand system is tops! But if I was going to get a new diesel, and I think I will for my next truck, I wouldn't even look at anything but the Dodge with the Cummins. There is a reason the others are willing to sell you a new truck for below cost........Duramax with their all aluminum Isuzu engine is unique to GM pickups, Ford with their Powerstroke (International Harvester) again made for pickups or Dodge with a real Cummins. If your dealer mechanics can't figure it out bring it to a real diesel mechanic at your Cummins shop. They only work on diesels. They don't fill in their day working on Chevettes, Impalas and an occasional diesel. That's all they know. I'm not a big fan of Dodge bodies, but I think the latest crop has improved. I believe the transmissions vary according to the size of the truck whether it is a 3/4 or 1 ton and I do not think the Allison auto is avail in the Dodge pickup line but could be wrong. It is avail in the Freightliners which are a Daimler Chrysler line. You might want to check on that. Sorry this got so long....Need my pills again.....GOTT

Dodge lost the cummins contract to ford. I haven't looked into it at all since I heard that was happening this year 2006 so if yer going with a brand new dodge make sure the turbo cummins is still avail. My bud bought a 2005 turbo cummins with the allison.... but wont hurt to see if thats still avail to the new too. and GOTTs right about the GMCs being nice trucks but if wanting a diesel going with the Dodge now someone get em his pills will ya lol

The GMC is no different than the chevy other than a slight difference in body and the price tag. The motor, trans, frame and suspension are all exactly the same between the two. I still haven't made up my mind yet. The allison trans is only available with the GM pickups. Dodge still uses that crappy 4 speed auto tranny. The next 6 speed allison has an electronic shift program that you can use when pulling stuff. Kinda like some of those slap shifters or whatever they are called on some of the new cars. The other thing I like about the duramax is how quiet they are. For the most part you wouldn't know if it was a gasser or diesel by listening to it idle.

i heard it was gonna happen too,but never heard any more.(cummins for fords)

Dodge seem to be the favorites among plowers here.Chevs aren't impressing anyone at all to say the least( i was a chev man, years ago). Fords seem to be in the middle somewhere(never liked, but starting to).I haven't done commercial plowing for about 10 years, but that's just the impressions i get from people around here lately. Alot of die-hard-never-change , chev &  ford guys seem to have switched over in around the last 5 yrs.I see alot of new dodges in their yards,if that means anything,i dunno. On a side note-- I lost my liscence for a bit(from one of your buddies :roflao:), and ended up running a bobcat (which i thought was gonna suck)....it was great- way funner than plowing. If you own it-better money, less maintenance---I loved it.My friend got one now and is loving it too.NOT too big or you lose the gravy jobs

Dodge still have the Cummins for the 07, not sure regarding 08. I still don't know what I am going to do. Chevy still is my pick right now, just cuz they have established everything and worked out the kinks. If I do go with chevy, it will be either an 06 or early model 07 classic. The second part of the year release for chevy and GMC is a new diesel motor, and I am not going to worry about dealing with a first year release of anything.

Must just be something with where you live, cuz it seems that all the plowers around here drive Ford. Even all the cities use Ford for plowing the streets and alleys.

for plowing, the one with the toughest tranny would be my choice

no doubt that the allison on the chevy/GMC has the toughest tranny around

my Dad had a dmax chevy. No problems whatsoever. Tons of power great tranny.

The 06 and 07 have had the tranny upgraded to 6 speed. Perfect combo The dmax and allison are the same for the past few years other than more hp for the dmax and another gear for the tranny. My experinces have been the dmax will outpull and outlast ford or dodge and be worth more money when its time to trade. JMO

The 48re tranny that dodge puts behind the cummins is hands down the strongest atuo trans on the market. Dodge is plagued with horror story of how :pod:ty the trans are, but that can go for chevy and ford also. From what I have been told the allison is a allison case with gm guts. Diebold bought 8 new chevys with allisons and 6 of them went out within 6 months. These trucks were used in the city, they work on atm machines. Its all about personal prefrence, I am a dodge man. I have a stright shift cummins, I would not trade it for the world.

As for ford getting cummins, that is not true. Cummins has been selling the 5.9 cummins to ford for the f-450's and bigger for several years. Dodge knows, and do not care. You have to special order a ford with a cummins, its the standard diesel motor for dodge. Now if the powerstroke is so awesome then why do they use a cummins in their bug trucks?

BTW, I rum 305 BFG M/T's on my truck stock.

Stick with a Chevy or GMC, you will be happier in the long run. Oh, by the way the Allison IS the best trans. out there, period.
