I have an 88 F-150 4x4 w/ 5.8 engine. My idle has gone crazy! When cold, it will idle normally for a few seconds and then surge to about 4,000 rpms then drop real low to where it almost dies and it keeps doing this for about 5-8 minutes or until warmed up good. I have cleaned the air idle control and checked for vaccuum leaks, also put in new plugs, cap and rotor.

Does anyone know what may be the cause here? I don't want to just start throwing money at it.........HELP!

ford has a long time problem with there motor computers.  (ie the mother board)

can try and replace it, read $$$ if you know anybody who can rebuild computers then it will only cost $$.

but then you can just trade it in for a chevy,   i know have to get a better truck will be hard.

i love my 445 cubic in, international diesel motor, the only problem is it is bolted to a ford.

sorry i do not know the codes,
but the last time i had mine into the dealer they burned out my horn, and did not solve the problems of the lights working on there own, the radio turning on, relys clicking and more, while the key is not even in the truck.

some times i have to disconnect both batt's just so i have juice to start it in the am.

I went an bought an idle air control valve......this was my first instinct but the sh0p guy said it didn't show on the codes and couldn't be the problem.......well maybe he is right but when I get time to install it, we will see...

The only reason I brought it to a shop was for the diagnostics and so I wouldn't be throwing parts at it, well here I am

I installed the idle air control last night. Again I checked for vacuum leaks with carb cleaner and found none anywhere. Drove it for 13 miles and it ran real good warm, will give it the test cold this morning.......*hoping*

Yes, shop #3 found the problem. It was the throttle position sensor and a bad ground. I asked the first 2 shops if it could be that sensor because thats one of 2 that I kept reading about on Ford Truck World forum, but???????? Anyway seems to run Ok now, well as OK as an old Ford can run LOL
