We're going to our first big group tour this weekend. It's going to require parking overnight several nights at a motel in a small town with my shiney new enclosed trailer.  :)

One thing I ALWAYS do to prevent trailer theft (can be stolen in 5 minutes or less) is put a weld between the ball nut and the ball threads. The nut cannot be removed.  I posted this a long time ago and many of our new members likely haven't seen it.

Without the weld all a thief has to do is pull alongside with his hitch ball removed and take off your ball nut and swing it over to his hitch, put on the nut, and he's gone in 2-3 minutes.   A padlock on the coupling won't do any good.  After he steals your trailer he'll park it in his garage and just cut off the coupling lock with a torch or abrasive saw.

ATV thefts are way up and ours are too expensive to leave to chance.

Another thing you should watch for is if you have a removeable reciever hitch is make sure your lock is good on that, a couple in our snowmobile group had there trailer and sleds stoled, all he had was a pin with a cotter pin they removed his reciver and slid it into there hitch.

Very good point, one that I had never really considered.

I do feel though that you can never "theft proof" anything,  if some low life wants it bad enough he will have a way to get it.  All we can do is take every step we can to stop the opportunist thief who just picks on easy targets.  All the locks and cables I use to protect my equipment is just a nuisance to a thief and I hope that he passes me by for an easier target, but I know if I encounter that one scum who doesn't mind a challenge he will have mine in no time.  Every little thing will slow them down and maybe just make them pass us by.

I wonder about drilling a hole though the nut all the way through the shank and then using one of the long slender pin style locks to lock the nut on?  That way if I still needed to take the ball off I wouldn't have the weld to contend with I could just unlock and loosen?

I wonder iof word has gotten around about Can-Am computerized ignition keys. It's possible that an 800 wouldn't have any stolen market value because it would have to go to a dealer for a new key and the registry would show it was stolen.

Just pulling out the key tumbler and jumping wires likely wouldn't work because of the computer.  At least it would deter the amateur.  Stripping it down for parts wouldn't do much good either because there just aren't enough machines on the market yet. Parts are not in demand because most everything is covered by factory warranty.  All a stripper could use would be the Rotax and the wheels/tires.

If the DESS on the Outlanders is like what they put on there Ski-Doo snowmobiles there is no way of a thief to get a key made, cause from experence I lost my tether for my MXZ REV and I had to show my registration card and I.D. to have them program me another, unless the thief has a good friend at a dealer.

Even though it is nearly impossible to get a key for it, I don't think that it is going to deter many thefts. The majority of the criminals that I have dealt with have idea about anything like this and are just grabbing whatever they can get ahold of. We have a large number of snowmobiles that are stolen around here, and most of them are found still on the trailer. Mainly Ski Doo's, since the thief could not get them started and just dumped them. The problem is that some people decide to either trash them or burn them when they dump them. Whether it is to try to stick it to the owner, or to attempt to destroy any evidence of them crime. You guys gave some real good info on the trailer theft prevention. You can never have too many locking parts on the trailer/hitch system. Most people will lock the trailer to the ball, but forget about the receiver pulling straight out of the truck.

My receiver is locked as is my coupler and if they still get it they'll only get to use one sled cause the other has D.E.S.S.

How about a hardened steel safety chain and a big hardened lock attaching it to the hitch? Won't stop them but will only give up to the more serious thief.

Guys, with "Bump Keys" being sold on ebay... nothing is safe with a lock on it.:pod: Unless they took them off last time I looked. Even if they did you can get them anywhere on the net. No more than 3 taps (usually one) with the end of a screwdriver handle/ rubber hammer... well the lock is open. THAT only takes about 1-2 seconds, and the lock is defeated. Im not jokin google "bump keys" an check out youtube.com for videos. Also there are .GIF files out there that show the buyer how to FIX the key when they get them as they do not work when you buy them.

This method will unlock 90% of locks out there today! Only way to stop it is have a bump proof lock. (the other 10%)
