OIC vista does have sfc...woo hoo

For what it's worth, to find the "run" box in Vista look in Programs > Accessories. BTW the Command Prompt is in there too

Trail what brand computer do you have?

It's a Gateway. I never registered with them, not sure if it matters.

I found run and ok'ed the scan but I have no idea what became of it. Tried it again a couple times. I clicked the ok and the box just dissappears.

I got this this morning but could this be because of improperly shutting down?

Should I try some of the tests?

Problem caused by a hard disk drive error

Windows was temporarily unable to read your hard disk drive. This problem is general in nature and we are unable to determine the specific cause of the problem from the problem report. In most cases this problem is temporary and can be ignored.

Common causes of this problem include:
  • Large file transfers from secondary media, such as an external hard drive, to a local hard drive.
  • The loss of power to a hard disk drive that causes inconsistent data sectors.
  • Problems entering Hibernation or Standby Mode.
  • Hard drive lag caused by filter drivers, such as virus scanners.
Troubleshooting

The following steps are provided as general troubleshooting steps that might or might not prevent the problem from recurring. If you cannot resolve the problem using the following steps or are uncomfortable performing them, we recommend you contact your computer manufacturer for assistance.
  1. Back up your files and folders immediately to prevent potential data loss.
How do I back up my files and folders?

    1. Click to open Backup and Restore Center.
    2. Click Back up files, and then follow the steps in the wizard. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
  2. Run a hard disk drive error checking tool.
How do I check my hard disk for errors?

You can help solve some computer problems and improve the performance of your computer by making sure that your hard disk has no errors.
    1. Open Computer by clicking the Start button, and then clicking Computer.
    2. Right-click the hard disk drive that you want to check, and then click Properties.
    3. Click the Tools tab, and then, under Error-checking, click Check Now. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

To automatically repair problems with files and folders that the scan detects, select Automatically fix file system errors. Otherwise, the disk check will simply report problems but not fix them.

To perform a thorough disk check, select Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors. This scan attempts to find and repair physical errors on the hard disk itself, and it can take much longer to complete.

To check for both file errors and physical errors, select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors.

    4. Click Start.
Depending upon the size of your hard disk, this may take several minutes. For best results, don't user your computer for any other tasks while it's checking for errors.

Note: If you select Automatically fix file system errors for a disk that is in use (for example, the partition that contains Windows), you'll be prompted you to reschedule the disk check for the next time you restart your computer.

  3. Make sure the drive cables are plugged in. If they are plugged in and you're still receiving errors, consider replacing the drive cables. Note: As a general rule, we recommend you backup your files on a regular basis in case of any unexpected hardware problems.

Well, since I didn't think I had anything to lose and I'm getting desperate, I ran the disk scan. The deep, fix and repair scan.

:omg: that is a long scan. Had to be at least 90 minutes. Windows did find a couple of bad clusters. I took a picture of the results. I can email if either of guys are interested. Means nothing to me. :shrug:Oddly, it did mention google. :scr:

Haha. Daughter doesn't touch this one. I learned that a long time ago.

For an update, I contacted a microsoft employee/friend. He doesn't believe vista uses sfc /SCANNOW.

Vista does have the System File Checker utility..........!!!!!

Verify the Integrity of Windows Vista System Files

Windows Vista includes a utility that will scan your system for corrupt, changed or missing system files. Running this from the command prompt is much easier than booting off the dvd into repair mode.

Right click Command Prompt and choose Run as Administrator

nifty keyboard shortcut.

Once you have an administrator command prompt open, you can run the utility by using the following syntax:
The most useful command is just to scan immediately, which will scan and attempt to repair any files that are changed or corrupted. You can run that command with this command:

SFC /SCANNOW

Cementhead has the same approach to computer repair as I do! Why do they have to keep making these more complicated. Is it just because they can?

I can't fix anything on this thing, I'm totally lost when you start talking computer terms and I feel like I get farther behind on all this technology stuff every day.  I've tried reading up on them and none of it makes any sense so I gave up.

But then I remember that I'm really good at changing the water pump on my truck, I can build a nice deck or garage, I'll never starve to death cause I can cook pretty good, I know how to catch a fish and I can read AND write. At my age I'm ok with that.

Now, am I the only one that feels this way???   GOTT

No, you're not the only one. :) Somehow, I think I got caught in the middle. I was old enough that I didn't think I needed to learn and young enough that I didn't think I would have to learn. If that makes any sense.

Luckily now I enjoy it and want to learn. Years ago I got bored with it after 15 minutes, now I'm like a crack addict looking for his next fix. I have no idea what that means. LOL.

No question computers are here to stay, time to go with the flow. Retirement is hardly around the corner for me.

Well now I feel a little better. I made it to retirement and I did use computers for about the last 20 years or so. I always worked with only one or two proprietary programs so I did manage to figure that out. But it did have it's moments. Now it's strictly for entertainment. If I could see how it worked I could fix it. Nothing  I can look at with these so I guess the old BFH is the answer. LOL  I know they're here to stay or at least until something better comes along. I'm sure that will be after my time....:hmr:.....GOTT

You can see how it works.  You just have to know where to dig and the desire to learn. Plus you will never get your hands dirty. LOL.  :)
