Critical Windows patch may wreak PC havoc

By Joris Evers
http://news.zdnet.com/2100-1009_22-5896041.html

Story last modified Fri Oct 14 18:36:00 PDT 2005

A Microsoft patch meant to fix critical security flaws in Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 is causing trouble for some users, the company said Friday.
The patch was released Tuesday to fix four Windows flaws, including one that experts predict will be exploited by a worm in the coming days. The flaw, tagged "critical" by Microsoft, lies in a Windows component for transaction processing called the Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator, or MSDTC.

Installing the patch can cause serious problems, Microsoft said in an advisory posted to its Web site Friday. The patch could lock users out of their PC, prevent the Windows Firewall from starting, block certain applications from running or installing, and empty the network connections folder, among other things, the software maker said.

The trouble appears to occur only when default permission settings on a Windows directory have been changed, according to Microsoft. The software maker has received "limited reports" of problems from customers but is still investigating the issue, a representative said.

Even if users experience PC trouble after installing the patch, they will still be protected against any attack exploiting the Windows flaw, a Microsoft representative said. The patch was delivered with LINK.

To resolve any problems caused by the MS05-051 patch, users should restore the default permissions for the Windows folder and the COM+ catalog. A guide is available on the Microsoft Web site, and steps start with changing the permissions on the "registration" folder in the Windows directory.

Free Gmail account

Anyone interested in a free Gmail account, send me an email to  bombrider@gmail.com

Here is a explanation of what Gmail is if you don't know. You can only get it from a referrer.

What is Gmail?
Gmail is a free, search-based webmail service that combines the best features of traditional email with Google's search technology. Gmail makes locating messages so easy that you'll never need to shuffle mail in your inbox again. Besides this entirely new way of reading and tracking messages, Gmail includes more than 2,500 megabytes of storage space - that's over two gigabytes. And on top of that, we'll keep giving you more space as we're able. Best of all, it's free.

Revealed: The Secret Tracking Codes Your Printer Prints
Thursday, October 20 @ 17:38:16
Topic Latest News

The pages that are printed by your colour laser printer may include tiny dots, almost invisible to the naked eye. The dots form a code that can be read by the powers that be, ostensibly to track down counterfeiters. Now, for the first time, the code has been cracked.
The Secret Service has admitted before that the tracking information is part of a deal struck with selected colour laser printer manufacturers – including Xerox, Canon and many others. If a colour laser printer is used to forge a document and agents get sight of the document, the codes can be read. However, the full nature of the private information encoded in each document was not previously known.

"We've found that the dots from at least one line of printers encode the date and time your document was printed, as well as the serial number of the printer," said EFF Staff Technologist Seth David Schoen.

You can see the dots on colour prints from machines made by Xerox, Canon, and other manufacturers. The dots are yellow, less than one millimetre in diameter, and are typically repeated over each page of a document. In order to see the pattern, you need a blue light, a magnifying glass or a microscope. But once you've cracked the pattern, you may be able to trace the owner of a printer that produced a suspicious document.

The major manufacturers tend to say little about the issue on record. When investigating the issue earlier this year for Issue 12 of OUT-LAW Magazine, a typical response was: "Epson is cooperating closely with industry groups and the relevant authorities in each country to prevent counterfeiters use [sic] its products in illegal activities. However, due to the sensitive nature of this issue we are unable to comment about the exact measures that are being taken."

With a serial number, a supplier can identify its customer – although it may not expect to receive such requests. OUT-LAW spoke to dabs.com, the UK's leading online retailer of computing and technology products. Spokesperson Louise Derbyshire said the company was unaware that printers left their fingerprints on each printed page. She acknowledged, however, "dabs.com uses serial numbers to track products as they move through our warehouse and are shipped to customers". So, if required, "we could trace the delivery address."

EFF and its partners began its project to break the printer code with the Xerox DocuColor line. Researchers Schoen, EFF intern Robert Lee, and volunteers Patrick Murphy and Joel Alwen compared dots from test pages sent in by EFF supporters, noting similarities and differences in their arrangement, and then found a simple way to read the pattern.

"So far, we've only broken the code for Xerox DocuColor printers," said Schoen. "But we believe that other models from other manufacturers include the same personally identifiable information in their tracking dots."

Xerox previously admitted that it provided these tracking dots to the US Government, but indicated that only the Secret Service had the ability to read the code. The Secret Service maintains that it only uses the information for criminal counterfeit investigations. However, there are no laws to prevent the Government from abusing this information, according to the EFF.

"Underground democracy movements that produce political or religious pamphlets and flyers, like the Russian samizdat of the 1980s, will always need the anonymity of simple paper documents, but this technology makes it easier for governments to find dissenters," said EFF Senior Staff Attorney Lee Tien. "Even worse, it shows how the government and private industry make backroom deals to weaken our privacy by compromising everyday equipment like printers. The logical next question is: what other deals have been or are being made to ensure that our technology rats on us?"

Feds' Net-wiretap order set to kick in

By Anne Broache
http://news.com.com/Feds+Net-wiretap+order+set+to+kick+in/2100-1028_3-5946880.html

Story last modified Fri Nov 11 12:15:00 PST 2005

On Monday, the clock starts ticking for broadband and Net-phone providers to make it easier for law enforcement to conduct surveillance on users of their networks.
According to a final order issued by the Federal Communications Commission in late September, all broadband Internet service providers and many Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP, companies will have 18 months--until spring 2007--to ensure their systems have backdoors that allow police to eavesdrop on their customers' communications for investigative purposes.

The 59-page order (click for PDF) followed years of pressure from the FBI, the Justice Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration. It would broaden the Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act, an 11-year-old wiretapping law that currently applies only to "telecommunications carriers."

The FCC has justified the expansion on the basis of terrorism and homeland security concerns, echoing Bush administration officials who have warned, for example, of the perils of VoIP services in rogue hands.

But even as the order kicks in, it remains unclear exactly what classes of providers within those broad categories must comply with the new rules or what exactly they must do to achieve compliance.

The FCC said in its original order that it reached "no conclusions" about whether universities, research institutions, and small or rural broadband providers should be subject the requirements. It sought comments on that topic through subsequent FCC notice. The deadline for receiving that initial round of suggestions also happens to be Monday.

The order's vagueness has perplexed some groups hoping to submit constructive suggestions. In comments filed last week with the agency, C&W Enterprises, a small broadband provider in rural Western Texas, wrote, "it is difficult to assess what the costs would be for our company or what type of exemption we would advocate without knowing what we will be required to do under the CALEA rules."

The FCC also sought comments on whether to broaden the scope of wiretapping requirements for VoIP services. The original order imposes that burden only on "interconnected" VoIP providers, such as Vonage and SkypeOut, which route calls through the public telephone network--leaving others, such as peer-to-peer services, unaffected by the rules.

An FCC representative acknowledged last week that the existing order does not set specific requirements. Instead, it is designed to "get the industry thinking" about making the changes "so they can begin to incorporate CALEA compliance," he said.

The agency plans to release another order clarifying those points--though as for when, the representative said, "I don't have any sense for that now." (The original order said a follow-up should be expected "in the coming months.")

Some industry representatives reported that they're already seeking ways to comply as they await the more detailed rules. The cable broadband industry, which counted about 1.2 million VoIP customers and 23.5 million Internet subscribers as of the second quarter of this year, is "working with the FBI on a CALEA solution for cable broadband service," said Brian Dietz, spokesman for the National Cable and Television Association.

Verizon executive Douglas Sullivan said Friday that his company supports the government's "legal conclusions" about expanding the reach of CALEA and has been working with vendors over the past few years to build compliant equipment. He noted that several unanswered questions remained, including how to recover costs associated with the changes and how enforcement will operate. "We understand that the commission intends to address these issues in a follow-up order we hope will be issued very soon," Sullivan said in an e-mail interview.

Meanwhile, preliminary legal challenges to the rules linger. The first one came from the American Council on Education, which has said universities and research institutions deserve to be exempted from the regulations because the changes required are too expensive and would prompt inevitable tuition hikes. A day later, a coalition of groups, including the Center for Democracy and Technology and the VoIP company Pulver.com, issued their own one-page notice of appeal. They intend to argue that Congress never intended for CALEA to apply to the Internet and that the FCC has stepped outside its bounds.

The court, as expected, consolidated both groups' challenges into one proceeding but has not yet taken any other actions, said John Morris of the Center for Democracy and Technology. The groups have until late November to file more detailed statements about the claims they're alleging.

How to Protect Yourself from Sony DRM Rootkit Malware

Sony began experimenting in November 2005 with new Digital Rights Management (DRM) software on their music CDs. While created to prevent pirating of the music they sell, the software appears to have unintended negative consequences for those whose computers it is installed in. Sony installs a system-level application that effectively hides all file names from the user with specific filenames. These files are still present on the system and can be run normally, however any mention of their presence on the system is hidden from the user. This could allow authors of malicious software to use Sony's DRM software to hide their trojan horses on your computer.

Disable Autorun on your Windows PC. This way the software cannot be automatically loaded onto your computer when you insert a Sony DRM enabled audio disc or application.

  • When you insert a Sony CD into your computer, do not accept the Sony End User License Agreement (EULA). Accepting this long document in legalese effectively means you give permission to Sony to install software on your computer. Don't.
  • Copy the music tracks to your computer if you so desire. Since these discs are designed to intentionally hide files from Windows, you may need specialized ripping software. Ripping programs such as Exact Audio Copy (see external links) can read these files if you have turned off autorun and disabled the spyware install.
  • If you're already experiencing problems, read How to Remove Cloaked Malicious Programs Associated with Sony DRM [/list]

    Tips
    • Technical novices can ensure safety by not placing any new CDs distributed by Sony or BMG into your PC until this issue is resolved.
    • The Sony rootkit does not attack Linux or Mac OS PCs. Along with many other advantages, this is a good reason to consider running an alternative operating system.
    • Do not buy music discs from Sony or BMG with copy protection. These discs cannot be officially called Compact Discs, as they violate the original "Red Book" standard from Philips. They can be easily spotted as the cases will not feature the familiar 'Compact Disc' logo

How to Create a Keyboard Shortcut for a Program
If you prefer to use the keyboard instead of the mouse whenever possible, you'll want to create keyboard shortcuts to open your most-used programs. Some keyboards come with buttons to open Internet Explorer, Outlook and other applications built into Windows, but you can create key combinations to open any application. Here's how:
    1. Right click the Desktop or Start menu shortcut for the program you want to open with a key combination and select Properties from the context menu.
    2. Click the Shortcut tab.
    3. Click in the Shortcut Key box.
    4. Press the key combination you want to use to open the program. This should be two of these keys: CTRL, ALT, SHIFT, plus one character key (alpha, numeric or symbol).
    5. Click OK.
Now you can open this program without ever taking your hands off the keyboard.

Is Zone Alarm Spying on You?
    Monday, January 23

It seems that ZoneAlarm Security Suite has been phoning home, even when told not to. Last autumn, James Borck discovered ZA 6.0 was surreptitiously sending encrypted data back to four different servers, despite disabling all of the suite’s communications options.
Zone Labs denied the flaw for nearly two months, then eventually chalked it up to a “bug” in the software -- even though instructions to contact the servers were set out in the program’s XML code. A company spokesperson says a fix for the flaw will be coming soon and worried users can get around the bug by modifying their Host file settings. by adding:

    # Block access to ZoneLabs Server
    127.0.0.1 zonelabs.com

    to your Windows host file.

The "bug" seems to be present in the retail version of Zone Alarm, so there’s no telling what the freebie gets up to.
