I am looking to buy a Laptop and am wondering what I should get. I don't want to spend a ton of money on it, but also don't want a piece of crap either. It would mostly be used for internet, games, and word processing for the business. CD burner and DVD rom are a plus. Thanks in advance guys.

OK look for one that has at least 512megs of ram. you already know you want the cdd/dvd burner so add that to the list. I would steer towards the pentium M processor. it will run longer on the battery with one. They are able to be faster with less some how.and being wireless never hurts :) Especially when yer out and about and need an internet connection :-X I didnt say that ... I didnt say that LMAO

Dell's used laptops are almost the same cost as new! I am more of an AMD processor fan than Intel. I just bought (from Best Buy) a Gateway 15.4" with an AMD Turion 64 bit processor(faster than the Intel LOL). It runs about 4 hours if just surfing the web on 1 charge. Very good IMO. It has a DVD burner, 100 gig hard drive and 1 gig of memory and wireless.....very sweet machine for $1200....another tax return gone :roflao:

If you are serious about playing games, you will want dedicated video memory which adds some bigger bucks.........

I know this isn't under a grand but it is a very good deal

Oh yeah they also had a deal where the Geek Squad would come to your house and set it all up with a wireless network for free if you bought it.......

Well I have built probably close to a dozen pc's and owned 10 myselfand from my experience the AMD's are faster and less expensive. The only downside was that they ran a little hotter but fans were produced exclusively for them. So not a problem. For gaming AMD rocks!!

yeah thats what all the AMD(honda) users say. IF you didnt have to have em overclocked to keep up with the pents, they wouldnt run hot. BUT they are cheaper. so if you run an oveclocked CPU thats a good thing. cause when you burn it up, its no biggie. you just buy a new one. My bro in law who is one of the higher up techs in Honeywell said, "if yer gonna be doin ONE thing at a time  surfin ... games ... what ever then AMDs would be fine. BUT if yer gonna load it down and be doin several things at once, then go pent". he said "if the two made a noise when bogged down the AMD's would be KOFF KOFF, and the Pents would be that sound you hear at the bottom of yer drink when yer slurpin the last bit out with a straw ... GIMME MOREEEE ... shrug. so basically the war on AMDs and Pentss is the same as da popos hondas and bombs LMAO

Ever notice how our board is much faster than others on the web?

The aurorawheelers server runs on  dual AMD Opteron processors, SCSI hard disks, W/ Linux, Apache and has redundant OC3c connectivity :omg:

How about a Dell Inspiron 8600 1.7 GHz Pentium M, 60GB 7200 rpm hard drive, 1 GB RAM, 1920x1200 WUXGA screen, DVD writer, NVIDIA video, Wireless 802.11a/b/g, and Bluetooth for $900+shipping/insurance?

Thanks SS, I'm thinking about holding off for a little bit now since I just dropped some money into my truck for repairs.

my knowledge of computers is limited, but i have found AMD to be much faster and have fewer freezes and it is a lot more virus resistant.  I think the AMD is definately better at gaming too with the ATI graphics card.  My pentium 4 would freeze running nascar 2003. :pod:

AMD rocks i refuse to use pentium. But I have been told this is a ford vs. chevy war.

of which i am a chevy fan. go dmax. :wh:

Yep, it's a Ford vs. Chevy thing.  Stability of a system is normally a funtion of the motherboard chipset, memory, power capacitors and power supply stability.  The CPU type has absolutely no affect on virus activity, that's a function of the operating system and prevelance of viruses written specifically to infect that operating system.  For gaming though, you're right, go with AMD.  As for the video card, you're back to a Ford vs. Chevy thing again, NVIDIA vs. ATI.  :)
