I am going to add a wireless network here. I have a cable broadband connection and 3 desktop pc's I want hardwired to the router and will be going wireless on a laptop and possibly 2 more pcs in the near future.

Any advice on what router and basic setup tips would be appreciated.....

Outlandish, I picked up a dell wireless router for $50 which has a setup for multiple computers to be fed off of the connection to the main cable modem.  I just have one extra computer hooked up but set up was almost idiot proof.  Insert the disk and the computer walks you through the process.  Also I have seen them cheaper and I have seen them much more expensive.  Why?  I don't know.  Good Luck.

Thanks trailrider. I need a router with some oomph. Have to reach about 200 feet and go through 6 walls. I don't know if a standard router will do that or if I need one of the pricey ones with the extended range that are around $150

Mine will not do.  States 100' but I don't think the signal will be that good at that distance.  I'm thinking 40'-50' w/o any aggravation.

Merry New Year

there are two types of network B and G   B is 11mbps and G is 54mbps i recomend G even though it is more expensive you will regret B later. the mbps it MIRCO bits per second NOT Mega Bytes per second. !!!!

I lean towards Motorola stuff because it works well and linksys can get tricky and i find the booster to become a P.I.T.A but it works.

** If you buy one Network (B or G) you need to buy only for that network (G will not work with B)

why don't you use one Pc as a host or server for your network and then use the other two PC's off the network it would be easier. I also found out doing it this way the computers use eachother as boosters and make the signal stronger so if you had a laptop (with centrino) and a PC with your HighSpeed Router connected with your Wire less router you should walk throughout house and find places with weaker signals and try to place one of your other PC's there and hook it up to the network. the use the laptop and hunt around (just walk slowly and don't jerk comp.) and repeat the process then u wouldn't have to use a booster or you could use a booster and put it just futher away(from wireless router) from center of house.

On the laptop if it has centrino then you will automatically pick up the network but if you don't you will need a network card

http://broadband.motorola.com/consumers/products/wn825g/default.asp

My router

http://broadband.motorola.com/consumers/products/wr850g/default.asp

so far has worked great goes through 3 floor and will reach anywhere in house

if you are still not happy with connection in a certain room you can add a booster

http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?childpagename=US%2FLayout&packedargs=c%3DL_Product_C2%26cid%3D1130267578138&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper

it comes with a CD and is easy to configure, but do not unplug or u will need to reset it then erase IP address and DNS server address memory on it then reconfigure

to add more PC's use something like this

http://broadband.motorola.com/consumers/products/wpci810g/default.asp

or

http://broadband.motorola.com/consumers/products/wu830g/default.asp?sSection=home_networking

or

http://broadband.motorola.com/consumers/products/we800g/default.asp

you can also hook up a network printer so you can print from any computer on the network anywhere in the house  using this

http://broadband.motorola.com/consumers/products/wps870g/default.asp?sSection=home_networking

***!!! IMPORTANT put a security setting on it so when you first pick up the network (with laptop) you need a password other wise with a set up like that you neighbors could get free internet from you!!!***

$$

Router  $37-65

Netork card -->not needed if laptop can pick up wireless networks such as Centrino $19-50

Booster $ 70-100

PC - Network - PC   Only need ONE NOT ALL

1. Way of adapter $40-50

2. Way of USB port $ 19-60

3. Way Of Ethernet Port $100

Could Use USB adapter for a Laptop also    USB adapter does NOT boost signal through computer only # 1 and # 3 thats why they are more expensive.

seems like if you were to buy online look at this website first they seem to have decent prices especially compared to amazon

ik but i was just giving him differnt ideas and to not wire PC-PC and do it all wireless you will need some sort of adapter for each then one for the laptop if he want a wireless printer theres another and depending how big you could make it so the PC's also act like boosters or just buy Boosters

and like i said before make it a secure network because with something that big your neighbors could get free highspeed interent. i can go about 800 ft outside my house in dense woods and pick up the network  P.S. if you live on a lake it is even more important to secure it because the network can somehow bounce off the water (across small bays and channels when calm ) at night when it has the mirror like look

I understand that and have no need for the printer bridge

I have 3 desktops (router) sitting here online right now. I need to reach the office and tie in another desktop (usb adapter or card) which is close to 150' and I will have a wireless notebook (wifi). What I'm hoping is that I won't need that booster
