That depends on how much you will use it, how deep the snowfalls are etc. The best value(and some may argue with me) is MTD. They build a solid no frills machine that will get the job done and are pretty reasonable. If you are doing just sidewalks and the snow is usually 6" or less maybe a single stage is what you need. I bought one this year mainly because I can lift it into my truck (about 80 lbs.) so I don't have to mess with ramps for each job. These work OK but not too good in wet or real deep stuff. A 2 stage is the best way to go if weight etc isn't a problem. It throws the snow much further and is self propelled. A 5hp would be on the small end and 10-12hp on the heavy duty end. For work here I have a 10hp John Deere w/ a 32 cut and most of the time it is overkill, big and heavy. But then there are those 1 or 2 snowfalls a year that it is nice to have that power! I would think a 26" cut and a 6-8 hp unit would be good for the snow amounts you get in your area.

Has anyone tried sub-contrcting out to a snow removal service after a big snowfall? How does loading a snowblower into a pick up with a ramp go? easy? Last edited on Sat Dec 17th, 2005 10:04 pm by roosterado9 |
