Anyone installed one themselves? You can buy these pretty cheap but the install is kind of spendy around here.

I've had em in my last 3 vehicles. I don't think I would try and install one myself. Looks like a good way to melt something. I had to have the one in my wife's car removed. We had an electrical problem and the dealer refused to work on it when they found it had an auto-start on it. We had it removed and brought it to a different dealer who found the problem and covered it under warranty. A pinched wire for the dome light up by the headliner. Now I have to bring it back and have it re-installed. With the ignition security lock-out, power door locks, trunk etc. I feel better letting somebody else do it.....GOTT

I installed one on a "95 chrysler. Took a while and it ended up the door locks required extra resistors for it to work (chrysler specific thing) so i ended up paying $50 extra for getting that done anyway, after spending half a day trying different resistors. Newer vehicles are trickier (dont bother)as they have security things to bypass, more confusing wiring systems, and risks of bad things happening. Older vehicles are not too bad and not much risk of screwing anything up.
There are vehicle specific instructions on the web. Here is one.
http://www.autostart.ca/downloads_wiring_information.php

If getting one installed, i like the ultrastart. Factory installed ones are a rip-off imo(same thing, 3-4x the price).Just dont let a dummy do it.The good installers usually mention that they solder all connections without being asked.
I'll never go without one again, they're awesome.Get the "panic" button hooked up to something else like trunk release, defrost,,heated seats, etc. Usually costs a few bucks extra.

The local guy that does these does a very good job, solders all the connections, guarantees his work for life.
http://andersonautoperfections.com/about.html

He uses Astrostart. Which from what I read and from friends with them, are very good units. Made in CA.
http://www.astroflex.com/index.php?module=CMS&id=15

I talked with him and for what I wanted would be about $289.00 installed.

Not having snow issues here, I'm assuming this is for de-icing the windshield and warming the car before you even think about going outside in January?

That's a good price installed. I've had three of em installed. I don't remember what brand they are. Dealers don't especially like to see em if you come in for an electrical problem and you're under warranty. I decided to wait to get one put in my truck til the warranty runs out in Jan. Once you have one you won't want to go without. Nice in the summer too to get the a/c working. I'm thinking the next one I get will have the feedback led on the remote to let you know if it started. You can never have too many toys.....GOTT  :ban:

Yeah and from what I hear the factory units are not very good. My buddy has one on his 08 Chev that is really poor compared to his last Astrostart

I just got a new truck and it sounds like 500 dollars for everything. I need to save up for that purchase before it starts to get cold up here.

Just thought of something..remember when you plugged in the old Chevy and then got bundled up 1 or 2 times in the middle of the night to go start it up then sat in it til it warmed up a little then went to back to bed. Only to get up a few hours later and do it all over again. Headbolt heaters, tank heaters, either, battery charger, jumper cables and a spare battery on the kitchen floor keeping warm. And the ultimate weapon....the garbage can cover full of charcoal to light up and slide under the oil pan to thaw out the oil. Now we can push a button and let it warm up while we watch out the window drinking coffee. And they call them "the good old days"......GOTT  :2cent:

my parents old neighbor had alzheimer's before he died. He lit a little warming fire under his K-car oil pan, just like the old days. I think they got him stopped before it went too far.
