It won't come on. I took it apart and the fans smell like they're cooked. It's just a tiny Dell that evidently we had sitting the wrong way, the fans were sucking up the carpet. :hmr:

Anyway, would the burnt up fans keep it from turning on or is the whole thing cooked?

The first thing mine does is start the fan, maybe the fan has to work before it fires up, as a safety precaution.

Last few days I thought mine was going to hover off the desk when the fan(fans) would get into high gear, it's been quite hot for about a week here, finally subsiding today.

Might be the reason my modem died?

I opened mine up and blew it out today too, read on the internet that you should do that atleast twice a year,it's been 3,   so I owe it a few blow jobs (place appropiate smiley here).

I know what you mean about blowing it out. Surprisingly it is pretty clean inside, go figure since it hasn't had much airflow in half a year. :pod:

I am not a computor geek. When mine acts up, I run it down to best Buys. They have always ran a quick check on it for free. If they can fix it in the store, the costs is fairly cheap and if they have to send it out, they will let you know if it is worth it or not. Do you have a Best Buys close to you? Good luck.

Sounds like the power supply. (What the fan is attached to.)
They will over heat and burn up.
About $60.00.

We have a Best Buy but the little computer store I bought it from is closer. I'll let them have a crack at it first.

I think the power supply is fine, it lights up and there is a little light inside the computer that lights up. It just won't start up. :puke:

owcch.. carpet is terrible for computers. I know it will sound sarcastic. and I don;t mean it that way. but desktops really should be on the desk. the floor is not a good place for them. floor dirt and dust is not good for a PC over time it will have an impact on it. as you have already found out.

I know the lights are on.. but it really does sound like a power supply issue. Again not to sound sarcastic. in instances where you can smell a cooking smell.. follow your nose. see where the smell is coming from, most strong. that can often help you find the cooked component. if it is on the motherboard, or the cpu or the HD it will help you narrow it down.

It was the fans that smelled. See if this helps explain anything. It's sitting on a folded newspaper. This will give you an idea how small it is.

I'm back already, motherboard was cooked. :puke:

So I picked up another used special and an external enclosure for the old hard drive.

This one is a big one, can't stand this one the wrong way. LOL.

$200 lesson. :pu:

oh well. if its just the mother board, (i know $200 doesn;t sound like a "just" thing) at least your data on the hard drives is in tact. its frustrating to have a $200 repair bill.. but can be more frustrating to loose data, that might not be recoverable at all.

Question, I would like to believe the tech was pretty honest with me, there was no charge and he was quick to point out 3 or 4 capacitors that were fried. He said if I was any good with a soldering iron I could probably fix this for a few bucks.

Waste of time or worth a shot?

You'll need a real small, low power iron and of course the correct caps.

it is up to you. but remember, the motherboard fried for a reason. fixing the caps may temporarily resolve the issue, but there could be something wrong with the motherboard that caused it to happen in the first place. it is your call. capacitors are cheap. I would remove one from the board, and take it and the motherboard to an electronic superstore or similar and have an associate pick you outthe correct capacitors. probably less than $5. so it's up to you. if it were me, I'd probably start thinking about a replacement though.

I use a laptop, the desk top is for the wife and kid, 200 bucks and them out of my hair, priceless. :tg:

I guess the point was should I fix this one for the next breakdown. LOL.

$200 for a used, back-up laptop, $500 for a new one. I hate choices like that.
