Just bought a synthetic rope for my winch a few weeks ago and already love it for three reasons.

1. NO cuts from frayed wires.

2. If it breaks no one is going to get killed (or wounded).

3. If it breaks it can be repaired without losing a lot of length.

I managed to break my rope this weekend doing something I knew was wrong... attempting to pull out a stuck Ford.  Winches are made for smooth pulling not jerking.

Anyway, lesson learned.

I decided to try and splice the rope together with the following procedure.

1. I used a hollow freebee pen from Home Depot and took off the end cap and took out the ball point end and cut off the ink cartridge at the base.

2. Thread one end of the broken rope into the pen and let it just stick out of the other end.

3. Replace the ball point so it pins the end of the rope to hold it (sewing needle).

4. About 8" down from the other broken rope end carefully stick the ball point pen between the fibers and into the center of the rope.

5. Carefully work your way up the center of the rope away from the broken end until you are about 8" from the entrance.  Then carefully work it out between the fibers and pull the pen out leaving the broken end from inside the pen in the rope.

6. Take the other broken end and put it in the pen the same way and carefully work it into the center of the rope near where it is sticking out and thread it through the center toward the opposite end.

7. Finish just like the other side by leaving the broken end in the center of the rope.

8. Smooth it by starting at the middle and working outward to each broken end that is left inside the center of the other.

This should maintain all of your rope strength, take up minimal space on the spool and help keep most of your rope length.
