  1. Don't know if you got this fixed or figured out but was this engine ever apart or serviced.  When does it back fire?  Throttling up, holding steady, or letting off.

Rock
The valve train may be in time giving you good compression and seem like everything is right.  But is the ignition in time with that . They are two different systems that work together but yet are independent of each other.   Something is telling it to fire when the intake is slightly or way open.  Does It need to been turned over many times before for this happens or does it start popping out the intake right away?  Is the plug in good shape or is it fouled?  If is fouled is it wet fouled with fuel?  If it's wet more then likly it is not burn the fuel completly or not at all.  Then when it does fire theres just so much, it lights it all up.
There could be low resistance or shorting stator  check all plug and wires for good clean connections and that all bolts and grounds are tight. See how you make out with the ignition timing first. Then look into testing the ignition components form there.

There you go! I had a 2002 Big Bear, rock solid machine, no cvt to worry about getting wet. That thing had a super low first gear on it if I remember right. That thing would climb anything in 1st. A little slow doing it but the grunt was definately there. Congrats on your new ride!!!!!
