I bought a "viper" winch on ebay for around 80.00 thinking I got the deal of the century. Hint, spend the money and get a decent winch. I used the winch 1 time. a couple months later I was planning a big ride at HatField-McCoy trailsystem in West Virginia and wanted to lube it up a little and make sure the cable wasnt bound up, that sort of thing, typical maintanence. I could pull it out with my hand. Now I'm a pretty strong guy but if I can pull the cable out on a 3,000 lbs winch with it engaged, there's something wrong. When I called the dealer they werent willing to help me at all because I was 3 months past the warranty.

I think alot of that has to due with lubrication. You might be able to avoid that by properly lubricating the cable and winch mechanism. I'm not a mechanic or anything but try that and it might solve your problem.
