 Pre Stretching Your Winch Cable

From the way I understand it, its necessary to ensure proper break in of the cable. The cable isnt wrapped on with much tension from the factory. So if you go and try to yank on somthing with it without it being tight on the drum the wire can get all snagged up on its self as it tightens.
Anyway the easiest way I have found to stretch it or whatever is to park your atv about 45 feet away from a good strong object that you are not going to budge(a tree or hitch on a truck can work good for this) and put the winch in freespool and pull out most of the cable and attach it properly to the stationary object. Then while pushing against the atv with your body, or lightly applying the brakes, winch your atv to the object. Making sure the line is rolling up correctly and not piling up on one side. Since its the 1st use of the winch you might want to let it cool a little about 1/2 way through. While it is rolling up you can also examine the wire for any kinks..
So the 'pre-stretching' puts the proper tension on the wire on the spool, and gives you the chance to check the condition of the wire

Hi.  I just got my Venom 3000x installed on my 800 Outlander tonight.  On my previous Sportsman, the winch was right out in front.  On the Outlander, it's burried behind the grill.  I can't see the drum and cable at all.

I want to stretch the cable but I cant see where it's at on the drum as it rolls up.  Any tips for makeing sure it's not bunched on one side?

Really not much you can do except manually guide it in from side to side

we hooked ours up to the truck. its fine to let all but half a spool of cable out and winch the cable in with a 250lb rider in neutral. if your on the trail and theres no tree to bring the cable back in tight, step on it with your boot.

So far so good.  I haven't used it a ton but it appears to be a well made winch.
