Most car/truck manuals state that over so many lbs (1000, 2500 etc) trailer brakes are recommended/required. Brakes add a LOT to the price of a trailer.  Surge bakes aren't that bad, no electrics under the dash, etc.  But electric brakes are a REAL pain.

I've been towing 2000# gross rig with my Subaru. Manual says brakes rec. over 1000#, max trailer weight 2500#. No brakes on my single axle enclosed HaulMark 6x12'.  Every time I brake I'm imagining the pin breaking on the Class 2 hitch (3500# rating) during a panic stop and all hell breaking loose.  Braking probably puts 10 times the strain on a hitch that towing does.

Since there's been a "groaning" started in the Subaru when I'm braking, I'm putting the Jeep Cherokee back in service after 4 years of dis-use. 100,000 miles on it with a class 3 hitch and solid as a rock.

Sorry for jabbering on about this but it's been on my mind. How many of you have brakes on a larger trailer?

It sure is hard to see the little red cursor on this COLOR background. VERY annoying. Outlandish please note.

I have electric brakes on my toy-hauler and never had a problem, Im towing around 8500lbs all loaded down with wheelers inside.Had surge brakes on a 4 place snowmobile trailer they seemed to work fine also until they would freeze up, so sold that and now have a 3 place Im done towing other peoples sleds. But I would say electric is much better than surge just my:cents:

I have had electric brakes on several larger trailers and  they have worked great. I think the secret to  electric brakes is the brake controler. Personally I think Prodigy is the best. it will tell you the instant there is trouble with yer system.   if you have a crappy cheap controller then yeah you might spend a lot of time hatin it

I'll second the recomnedation the Prodigy...The best brake controller I have ever used.

As for brakes vs no brakes......I haul a 6000lb trailer witha 3/4 ton Dodge... and let me tell you thank God the trailer has brakes. Several times I have had to hit the brakes hard to avoid an accident and even with the Dodges big brakes I don't think they would have gotten the rig to stop in time by itself...Plus having the trailer braking ads a lot of control.

If I'm not mistaken Minnesota requires them on trailers over 3,000 gvw. I once pulled a pop-up trailer out west that weighed 1500 plus loaded and sure wished I had them when we got into the mountains. Electric is the only way to go. Easy to adjust and easy to back up. I think surge brakes are becoming a thing of the past. I was quoted around $200-$250 for the parts to add electric brakes to my trailer plus a controller. That's on my list of things to get done this summer.

I have a 10' and a 12' trailer that I don't normally need brakes on but I wished the 12' had them from time to time.

I would not own a trailer 16' or longer or if it was a heavy enclosed one without brakes.

I bought a 20' car hauler to haul 4 wheelers and cars on and it was either $50.00 or $100.00 to add the brakes (1 axle) to it when I ordered it.:dan:

I think you can get an axle with brakes on it for about $250.00 and then you can sell your old one for $100.00 or so.:)

I have never seen a Prodigy brake controller but I will check into them if they are the Bomb!:tg:

My company supplies my truck and they have always put Tekonsha controllers in them.

Tekonsha makes the Prodigy, Draw-tite makes the Intelli stop. Both the same thing with different stickers. Check ebay

Trailers and trailers , that is me for sure, I have , now lets see,
1 - boat trailer 22 foot boat , single axle, no brakes
1 - 24' Pace enclosed all steel, tandem, and tandem electric brakes 10000 lb
1 - 30' Triton enclosed all aluminum tandem, sigle electric brakes 5000lb
1 - 24' open car trailer tandem axle and tandem electric brakes
1 - 12' open flat bed with side, no brakes 1500lbs

I have had surge disc brakes before and they were ok, but you do not have the controll over them like you do with electric brakes.

I have only had a litle problem with my Trtons brakes and it was actualy from lack of use, I parked it after coming back from a snowmobile trip, and the trailer was covered in snow and ice, and it kinda sat that way untill spring, so the salt and lack of use sized them up, but that it.
Yea you need and want brakes on your trailers for sure, and when they get much over 1500 lbs you really want them, I tow with a 02 Dodge Ram that is tricked out and out pulls just about anything with 425 rear wheel hp and close 1000 ftpds of torque, so I need to be able to stop it just as fast I figure, so I have also installed an engine break on the Ram, which takes car of about 75% of regular braking.
