Trail Tool Pack
No Sweat, We've Got it Covered!
Tom Bukowski

Ahh, the great outdoors! You're miles away from the annoying distractions of civilization, briskly navigating your favorite mountain trail on a warm summer afternoon. Life is great . . . until your forward movement suddenly stops and your engine revs as if it were in neutral. Hmmm, you downshift--same thing, what gives? You dismount, and a quick inspection reveals your chain-driven machine is now "chainless." Uh-oh. Backtracking a few steps reveals your chain lying contentedly along the trail, sans masterlink. Are you prepared?
A little time spent before your ride assembling an emergency tool/supplies kit can make the difference between being back on the trail riding in five minutes or arriving back at the truck by foot power long after dark. Your kit can be as complete or as spartan as you desire, but something is much better than nothing.
We normally carry a small relatively light fanny pack full of tools and supplies normally capable of getting us back to the truck or home 95% of the time. Here is a breakdown of the typical contents of our pack.

Pliers
Small interchangeable bit screwdriver
Adjustable wrench big enough to remove spark plug (cut to shorten if desired)
Spark plug
Masterlink (a belt could be carried on the machine for auto ATVs)
Safety wire (hundreds of uses for temporary repairs)
Tire plugs and tool
CO2 inflator with extra cartridges (Average ATV tire requires three cartridges)
Spare change/bills
Small set of metric Allen wrenches
Small nylon rope or tow strap
This small assortment of supplies can usually get us out of most of the trouble we happen to find ourselves in . . . and boy, do we have a knack at finding trouble!

I seem to get the opportunity of either pulling Polaris's out of the mud (3) or towing  them all the way home(2). Only pulled 1 Honda and 2 Yamahas out so far.

But we are getting a little

:ot:

Back to the subject:  I do carry rain gear and azz wipe in my box

99% of the time its usually two brands pulling me out.... if i get stuck not just one atv can get me out, ive never had ANY of one brand atv pull me out, like one yamaha or one honda... last i got stuck it took a 650 rincon and a 660 grizz.... even then they had trouble.

tanks get stuck too... i was in one of them atv eater holes.... it was that thick clay mud and it was pushed up against the front end.. so it took two atvs and 3 winches to get un stuck..

Adding to the toolkit today.

Ratchet & Socket that will fit the lugnuts. Adding to the trailer ASAP. A spare ATV tire.

Ripped a valve stem on Sunday on the 500. And had to do some serious limping to get it back.

Which ATV tire as a spare? You'd need two, one front and one rear, wouldn't you? I was debating going to metal valve stems, but decided that a rubber stem was less likely to tear if it hooked on tree branch. A metal stem wouldn't have any "flexation", like when a palm tree bends in a hurricane.
