When do I need to use low range and why?

Basically, you will need to use low when traveling at slow speeds (10mph or less) and going over obstacles. A good example would be driving up to a curb and stopping when the front wheels touch. If you remain in high and attempt to go over it you will here the motor strain and the belt will slip. In the worst case if you keep on trying you can flat spot the belt, if you did, you will know because it’s going to smell of burnt rubber. A flat spotted belt will cause the quad to be jerky when starting off and severe spotting will lead to excessive vibration at high speeds. Also when attempting to climb steep hills, pulling heavy loads, or whenever you are stuck and in thick mud condition you should be in low or you may face a flat spotted belt. General cruising on nice trails should never require the use of low gear, slow technical trails do. This is only a general outline but if you listen to your quad, use a little common sense and you will soon know every condition when it should be used.
