Just a quickie warning.  If you ride in the winter and there's more 4-6" of snow, don't try to turn off a road and cross a ditch just bcause there's an obvious snowmobile trail going that way!

Snowmobile don't dig in the way ATVs do.  The first time I tried this on my Traxter Max I got totally stuck. No place to hitch a winch to, all frozen ground. Tires (ATRs) couldn't go deep enough to hit ground because the under carriage was held up by snow.

It was approaching sunset, I was alone, and I blew my Fiamm horn in 3 blast cycles for a half hour with no response.  No occupied houses anywhere in sight.

Just at sunset, the one pickup truck that drove past in the entire hour was nice enough to pull me out backwards. If he hadn't come by they probably wouldn't have found my bones until spring thaw.

So, if there's snow, be wary. Be very wary.

Been high centered a few times in deep snow. It is not fun!!! (Even for a young guy like me LOL) Good reminder Turbo. I already caught myself busting through a 3' snowbank and winter is just starting

I carry a full size shovel on my quad as well as a chain saw at all times. One good thing to do is..

1) Post a message on a atv forum of when and where your riding at, or leave a message with a quad buddy. Let the forum or buddy know when you get back.

2) Use the shovel to dig out the bottom of the frame. When free use short runs back and forward to pack down the snow. You can also stomp the snow down with your feet to compact it. Stomp down the center portion of the tracks also so your frame dosent get stuck.

3) Dont panic. Just take frequest rests.. Dont kill yourself.

4) When going in the snow if you lose traction KILL the throttle. If you dont you will just dig yourself a hole.. You want the snow compacted.

My first time out 4 wheeling.. I went on my Polaris, no winch, met up with a friend on a Bomb. No winch.. Well he got stuck, got him out.. Then  I GOT stuck bigger than life.

1 tow rope and about 40 ft of solid snow ground a few ft deep. After the 40 ft mark there was about 5 ft of solid ground. We left the quad there and went back to the truck. GOt 7 tie downs and 1 tow rope. It just reached. Got her out..

Lesson learned..

I have 2 long tow ropes, 50 ft of winch line and a winch now LOL

We ride alot in the snow.. LOL

Good post Viper65, here's my 2cents. I do about half my riding in the Sierra snow, and it's a lot of fun. I always have someone nearby, and I always bring a snow shovel (must have). I also bring plenty of layers, you get really hot after shoveling for 20 min. And don’t wear cotton, it cools you down by holding onto your sweat.
